Teen Titans

Strengths: - Play as any character at any time - Real attacks from the show - Detailed environments - Color-coding damage system - Loads of villains from the show

Weakness: - No playable Terra - Graphics are nothing special - Stock art

As a true fan of the TV series, I must say that this has kept in line with the show. The dialogue is in character, the sound effects sound like that of the show, the designs are kept in line, and even the music brings joy to my ears.

The graphics might not be perfect, and the art on the box and most of the manual are stock, but I love the overall design of it. The attacks are basically what they are in the show, but they left out many of Raven's powers like healing, teleportation, and stopping time. I wasn't surprised. The animation is very cute, and the shading on the setting and the characters is actually some of the best I've seen for the GBA.

The plot might be new and original, but I think that making Brother Blood in as the main bad guy was a bit of a mistake - he's kind of boring. I haven't played far into the game enough to know whether or not Slade is a villain as well, but I sure hope that he is. I know that there are supposed to be a LOT of villains from the show, though.

The music is very catchy, especially the remix of the theme on the title screen, and the sound effects also sound a whole lot like they do on the television show. Usually licensed games have pretty boring sound, but I like how it turned out for this game. Even the voice work is super, though you never hear any of the voices of the villains.

I played as all five of the Titans to see what it was like, and the gameplay is very good. I found that each Titan had their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as different skills to get through situations.

Robin's attacks are more powerful and they are kind of cheap, but his bombs do a lot of damage. His assaults also use less energy up and usually have high accuracy. For any normal enemy, one hit or two hits with his bo staff will be the easiest way to bring them down. His staff is also one of the only moves in the game that will hit small enemies that crawl along the floor.

Cyborg's attacks are more useful and have a variety. His cannon is very powerful but pretty much useless against all of the bosses and Titan clones. Cyborg's moves are also very powerful, but they eat up a lot more energy than that of the other heroes. I found it quite useful to perform a ground pound to break things open or to hit enemies that were smaller and scamper along the ground. His ability to hack into computers is useful, but it isn't needed as often as I would expect.

Of the five Teen Titans, I found myself playing as Raven the majority of the time. Not only because Raven is my favorite Titan anyway, but because her attacks do a good amount of damage while not using up a whole lot of energy. She is the only character who can pass through areas protected by laser devices as well. Her most poerful attack causes several stone platforms to fall from the air, and that does a good amount of damage. Less than you would expect, but still quite a lot.

Starfire, of the five, I find has the smoothest gameplay. Her attacks have a wide variety of effects and damage ranges, they don't waste too much or too little energy, and they are good for more than just pounding through bad guys relentlessly. They can trigger certain passages, break through doors, and smash open boxes to reveal the items inside. The only thing bad about Starfire is that her flying looks as if it's controlled by her starbolts, and any fan of the TV show knows that that just isn't true.

Finally, I come to Beast Boy. He plays rougher than Robin and uses up a lot of energy, but is useful for traveling around at high speeds and squeezing through small spaces. I don't use him that often, but his tiger attack is very powerful and good for taking down a lot of powerful adversaries.

The fights with the main villains aren't as frequent as one would imagine. Instead, the evil clones of each Titan are a big part in the storyline, and fighting them reminded me of when the real Titans were fighting their evil selves in "The End" (an episode of the TV series). The boss battles are quite a lot more difficult than I had expected for a game aimed towards younger kids. Again, the moves the villains use are the same as they are in the TV show.

The game in itself is more complex than I thought and kept me entertained for an hour or two before I came back online. The idea of the color-coded enemies was actually a very cool one; instead of critical hits or whatever to deal extra damage, they have that system. I'm also gllad that if a Titan is defeated they aren't actually gone from that level.

Majesco is one of the lesser-known companies inthe video game business. Normally, licensed games by any company are total hunks of junk and a disgrace to the shows they are based off of. Fortunately, this isn't the case with the GameBoy Advance version of Teen Titans. The game is entertaining and has a gripping plot. It is fun to play and doesn't suck.

All of that works just fine for me. I eagerly await when the console version of the game comes out next year.

Teen Titans

Teen Titans, developed by Artificial Movement and Motion, is a classic example of strong design crippled by weak execution. Players take control of all five of the Teen Titans in an attempt to stop Brother Blood's in his attempt at world domination. Fighting through the city is no easy task, however, as all five of the Titans must be used to battle the plethora of enemies that stand in their way,...
