Tomb Raider Legend

Strengths: Graphics are gorgeous, no more of that moving-like-a-tank nonsense; this is the way Tomb Raider has always have meant to have been.

Weakness: A bit on the short side.

I'll be honest. When the original Tomb Raider released for PC in 1996, I didn't buy this game because of the revolutionary 3D gameplay, or the well-crafted puzzles that often led to a quick end if you were just a hair slower or missed a ledge. No, I bought the game because you can make Lara do handstands, and she fights dinosaurs. (Who didn't like confronting a T-Rex with Uzis a-blazin'?) So it's nice when the franchise returns to its roots a decade later after several half-assed attempts by the original developers.
Unfortunately, life is not all rosy for Ms. Croft after her dramatic makeover: puzzles in this game are easy to solve, combat is shallow and a bit too Rambo-esque (what's an archaeologist doing with grenades anyhow?), and go all James-Bond-on-a-Ducati during the game's quick-time events (where you have to press the button you're instructed to press in nanosseconds; if not, Lara meets an untimely death). Tomb Raider Legend is a great new start for the franchise, but compared to other similar titles of today, it's just a solid action game that can beaten in a weekend. Still, it's worth a whirl if you haven't seen the girl in ages - just don't hope to rekindle the passion.

Lara Croft is back!

Strengths: Lara Croft; beautifully rendered levels; detailed environments

Weakness: Short and simple; sluggish framerate and quirky camera at times

Tomb Raider: Legend finally brings Lara Croft back and she was definitely sorely missed. She looks absolutely fantastic in this game, and so do the levels. Unfortunately, the game itself is too short and not very challenging. In addition, the framerate can get quite sluggish at times and the camera tends to have a mind of its own. Overall, it's a beautiful game but worth only renting for a weekend.

Tomb Raider Legend

Strengths: A solid return (from near death) of the Tomb Raider franchise

Weakness: Vehicle portions not the best

Tomb Raider Legend is an excellent revitalization of the franchise. The game is well-polished and fun. It is very story-driven with dialog and cutscenes. To liven those up a bit, some of the cutscenes are playable - they require your interaction in order to proceed which is a nice change of pace from most games.

The biggest change over previous games is the freedom of control for Lara that those games were sorely lacking. Instead of the chore of precisely timed button presses, control here is fluid and fun. The action portions have been spruced up and are more fun now than ever before.

The game also has a good amount of exploration and puzzle solving. One of the best areas is the Croft mansion, which is standalone from the main storyline but provides some difficult to solve puzzles resulting in some of the best loot in the game.

Overall, this is an excellent game and it appears the Tomb Raider franchise is finally back on track.

tomb raider legend!!!

Strengths: good graphics!

Weakness: glitches on gameplay!

Good graphics, good music but really not very well executed. The entire time you're having 2 guys talk to you via sattelite, it takes away from what Tomb Raider was originally meant to be. The original Tomb Raider was most likely longer than this game, that's how short it is. It's still cool to play no doubt, just seems the devoloper is running out of ideas for Lara Croft. I would reccommend renting this one first, it's not going to take you long to beat it, even if you play very little.

What a Tomb Raider game should be

Strengths: Solid action/adventure elements with puzzles tossed in.

Weakness: May renew interest of old TR fans, but doesn't bring newness to the genre.

I don't mind games being short, especially if I plan on waiting a while before picking a title up. In the $10-20 range, Tomb Raider Legend is a great game. It's fun without any of the baggage of the previous titles. I got about an hour into Angel of Darkness and completely lost interest. With Legend, I found the controls, graphics and gameplay all engaging. As a fan of the first three games, this one is much better (since the old games haven't aged that well), and deserves a spot as one of the best in the series.

Legendary Tombs

Strengths: Graphics and story

Weakness: Cliche gameplay and short

Tomb Raider games have gotten a bit stale, and this title breathes new life into the franchise.

The graphics are improved and Laura Croft has never looked better. I found the controls to be fairly easy to use and combined with the decent story the game is enjoyable. However Legend does not introduce anything new and can be somewhat cliche at times, plus the game is also really short and can be beaten in one sitting.

Overall I would recommend this game to anyone looking to a quick and simple game playing fix.

Lara's back!

Strengths: Great controls, graphics, and gameplay. Simply fun to play. Best Tomb Raider ever!

Weakness: Short. 360 version looks much better.

Finally, a good Tomb Raider game. Gone are the bad controls and boring gameplay. Lara controls great and makes gameplay fun and easy. The graphics are excellent and the puzzles are actually fun to figure out. The gun combat is also fun since the L trigger locks onto targets and the R trigger fires. The environments are breathtaking and are extremely fun to traverse. The game is so good that you don't want it to end. That is the only problem with this game, it's short. Still, it's a worthy addition to your collection and the best Tomb Raider game ever. A++

Tomb Raider re-imagined for all the current systems....

Strengths: Lara Croft on Xbox, franchise redesign by developer Crystal Dynamics, updated graphics, no more block-based puzzle grids, new abilities to master

Weakness: Short overall length, lack of challenge, frame rate issues, limited replay value, doesn't look as good as 360 version

Since the original Tomb Raider graced the Sega Saturn many years ago, Lara Croft's series of games hasn't been available on any home console (PC not included) but the Playstation. In that time developer Core Designs managed to get itself into a rut producing sequel after sequel with little to no innovation and took the series to a new low with its poorly-received Angel of Darkness installment.

Thankfully, Lara's latest adventure is now available on any number of home consoles (Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo Gamecube, etc.), and publisher Eidos put development duties into the capable hands of Crystal Dynamics. What you get is a complete reworking of the franchise with all-new graphics, controls, mechanics, etc., and professional reviewers have called it the best Tomb Raider title since the original.

Lara begins this outing by investigating the death of her mother and eventually stumbles into an adventure involving the legend of King Arthur. The story doesn't matter here so much as the changes to the fundamental game play. You now have motorcycle riding levels and interactive button-press sequences (a la Resident Evil 4) in addition to the regular exploring and gun play.

The new gaming consoles have also allowed Crystal Dynamics to do away with the blocky grid-based crate puzzles of years past, and the new graphics engine does wonders for the look of Lara and her world. The cost to all of this is that your time with Lara will end in roughly 5-10 hours, and you won't have much beyond time-trials to bring you back for more.

Tomb Raider: Legend brings some welcome change to this tired franchise, and it's a pleasure to once again see Lara on a non-Sony system. For $20 or less you could certainly do much worse that this adventure, but just be aware going in that this game is pretty short with little reason to return for repeat engagements.

Tomb Raider is Back

Strengths: Gameplay, controls, graphics

Weakness: Some puzzles are a little hard to figure out

After original Tomb Raider came out on PS1, the series has been in a freefall in terms of quality. With the last release of Angel of Darkness, the series was in dire need of a major overhaul. So, publisher Eidos yank the series from the original creators of the series, Core, and gave it to Crystal Dynamics (whom have been responsible for the Legacy of Kain series, and Project Snowblind). As a result, the series is finally on track. The gameplay and controls are vastly improved. The platfroming aspect is much more tolerant: no more horrible cameras or precise platforming. One minor problem is that about quarter of the time, you will have no clue how to solve a puzzle. Sometime, there's no clue given so you're force to just play around until something works. Overall, a great 3D platfroming adventure.

Ms. Croft's best adventure since the first!

Strengths: Excellent graphics, better controls than the previous Tomb Raiders.

Weakness: Repetitive enemy design, overall a short game.

Since the first Tomb Raider, I have wanted another game that was all about exploring tombs and having an excellent gameplay experience while performing this. The past few Tomb Raiders did not deliver on this, but Tomb Raider Legend really picks up the pace. The game is all about exploring tombs, fighting off baddies, and solving some impressive puzzles much like the first game in the series. The visuals are absolutely stunning. I couldn't believe how realistic the water effects looked the first time I dove into a stream. Lara even appears wet and drips when you climb out of the water. The puzzles are big and not always so obvious as you would expect from a Tomb Raider game. The action is great and the storyline is fairly good. The main problem is that you can easily finish this game in a day if you keep playing. Thankfully there are a few extras that you can unlock by performing certain tasks per level. You should definitely give this game a try, even if you didn't like any of the previous Tomb Raiders.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend

Several years ago creator Toby Gard brought to life a beautiful female adventurer with impossible curves and a thirst to explore the deepest reaches of ancient tombs. She has since made her return on the original PlayStation (let’s not forget the Sega Dreamcast) as well as a forgettable return on the PS2 and, of course, made it to the big screen twice. While her adventure began to lose steam...
