Legacy of Kain: Defiance

Strengths: A good old fasion hack 'n' slash with futuristic upgrades.

Weakness: can be a little repetitive. but that's what a hack 'n' slash is.

I really like this game considering it's a hack 'n' slash. But don't take my word for it. Buy it from rotten tomatoes, There selling for a lot cheaper then you'll find it any where else. And no I am not working for rotten tomatoes.

Legacy of Kain Defiance

Strengths: Fun action-adventure game with intriguing combat system and deep story, excellent graphics

Weakness: Camera problems

Legacy of Kain Defiance is an action-adventure game where you take control of 1 of 2 characters and progress through a fairly linear story. It is a mix of combat and puzzle solving, though with more emphasis on the combat. The combat is deep and engaging. The story is decent and would probably make more sense to someone who played the previous games (I hadn't).

The graphics are excellent for a PS2 game, though the camera can sometimes cause problems during combat - but that's true for most of these types of games.

Overall, this is an excellent game that can be picked up dirt cheap these days either used or new.

Pretty good gothic style fun

Strengths: Very good graphics, solid action gameplay. Good voice overs and music/soundtrack.

Weakness: Somewhat confusing storyline. Spotty camera issues at times. A bit linear, could branch out more.

Alright, so I have to admit even though I've heard of this Kain series before, I have never played any of the previous titles, so I suppose getting a bit lost and confused in the storyline of the game is to be expected, but to the game's defense, it was still pretty decent, even with all the plot holes because of my lack of knowledge of prior storylines from the preceeding games.

Okay, that out of the way, let's get to my review of this bad boy...or boys in this case. With a great atmospheric soundtrack, one of the better video game voice acting jobs I've experienced in a long time, and some great, sometimes gorgeous graphics...Legacy of Kain: Defiance is overall an excellent title and good fun, even for those who missed out on the previous ones. I was able to get this game on sale and figured why not, but was quite surprised at the high production values that came off the tube when I popped the game in my magic black box. In Defiance, you actually play two characters, switching back and forth...accordingly to the storyline. To make it short but sweet...basically one guy is a vampire and he sucks blood off of your enemies and the other guy similar sucks souls, wicked huh? This isn't your grannie's type of game, and the Mature rating is definitely warranted, as the game gets pretty graphic...but hey, that's part of its intrigue and fun! So depending on where you are in the story, you go through and beat the battles using a pretty fun battle system where both characters can use telekinesis powers to lift enemies up and throw them or use it to execute devasting combos...quite fun and satisfying really, especially with the excellent sound effects of the game, you really feel like a bad, bad man slamming whoever gets in your way. Kind of feels like the Crow meets X-Men or something for you comic fans out there. Unfortunately, as fun and pleasing as it is, the camera does get in the way and makes it frustrating at times. There were parts where I was being hit or hitting things that I couldn't even see or know where they were coming from...definitely annoying that took away from the gameplay a bit. In addition, even though I may overlook the nature of the plotline a bit because of unfamiliarity of the whole series story, the game, which I though would be more rpg, but turned out more action/adventure like...is a bit linear. I mean there's really no freedom to roam around or do whatever you want, which is a bit of a shame, considering how cool and bad (in the good way) the characters were.

Overall, especially at the sale price I got it for, I shouldn't be nitpicking and if anybody can get this game on sale and has a gothic fetish or would just like some good, well made action gaming, then pick it up. If you're a fan of the series, then it's probably a forgone conclusion, Defiance is likely a near masterpiece that should be in your gaming library.

Legacy of Kain : Defiance

Strengths: Nice graphics. Fun hack and slash play. Good Storyline

Weakness: Bad camera angles and repetative

Having been a fan of the series since Soul Reaver for the PSX. The hack and slash aspect has not changed. The things that have changed is the awesome graphics. The environment sets the mood. The characters are detailed. The camera angle is less to be desired. If your a fan of the series, you'll love this.

Good fighting game

Strengths: Quick and fun

Weakness: Repetitive

Besides for the repetitiveness and sometimes bad camera angles, the game is very fun to play. It has solid fighting and the game is fun to beat although it gets boring sometimes.

The series finally concludes

Strengths: Great storyline, excellent combat system.

Weakness: The camera angle can definately get annoying at times.

Legacy of Kain: Definace does what I've been waiting for through now 5 titles- it brings together the entire story which has become more and more confusing as time went on. In the previous games you played as either Kain or Raziel and when the game concluded, there were more questions than answers. Now that Defiance is here, all those questions can be answered.

But besides the excellent storyline, is the game worth playing? Absolutely! Granted, it's no different than any of the previous four... you still just spend the majority of your time hacking an slashing (with a little puzzle solving mixed in). But, in this game you gt to play as both characters as you make your way through each level. The combat system is definately well done and there are several new moves not available in previous games. The backgrounds are well done and the sounds are fairly crisp as well. My biggest complaint is the camera angle, as it seems to seclude you, making it hard to find and fight bad guys sometimes, as they may be off screen.

The best of two worlds

Strengths: + the conclusion of a very deep storyline + mostly nice graphics

Weakness: - easy to get lost in story and during gameplay. - horrible, fixed camera

Legacy of Kain: Defiance is the last part of a long series of games from Eidos - the Soul Reaver series and Blood Omen series.

As expected (since there were a total of 4 games before this one) the story is very deep. There are text summaries to get you up to speed with everything that has happened so far, but they are a bit overwhelming and the font is very small. Luckily there is also the intro video from the original Soul Reaver and it does a decent job of setting up the characters.

The graphics are mostly awesome. The characters are nicely detailed and the environments give off a medievil/gothic mood. However the enemy characters are a bit simple in design so they don't stand out.

The greatest weakness of the game is the fixed camera. When you walk past a certain area, the camera will automatically switch into a different angle - similar to Capcom games like Devil May Cry, Onimusha, etc. But because this game is in a huge part a puzzle game i.e. you have to search for items to open doors, the fixed camera becomes a nuisance as you can not easily explore rooms. So while the environments are expansive and look huge, the camera angles change so much that it feels very restrictive.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance

Strengths: Hack and slash to the max - Very similar to Soul Reavers and Blood Omen

Weakness: Nothing exceedingly unique to the series

I've always been a fan of the Legacy of Kain series since playing the original Soul Reaver. After that, I've played it's sequel and the Blood Omen 2 game. Soul Reaver deals with Raziel, and Blood Omen you play Kain. In both games, they have been somewhat of enemies/nemesis but never sure how they fit together. In Defiance, you play both characters, as they struggle to SAVE the WORLD (a tired storyline, unfortunately ).
Id recommend this game to fans of the Kain series, or anyone who enjoys a hack and slash type of game. It does help to know the history of the characters though.
