Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Excellent control and new moves for Mario, including flying with a water jetpack

Weakness: Firing the water pack doesn't play nearly as well as Mario's other moves, blue coin collection is tiresome

It's a new Mario game! (Or, at least, it was when I bought it.) It was loads of fun to play, and I do intend to replay it soon for completeness' sake.

The game plays, on the whole, very similarly to Super Mario 64. The primarily difference is the introduction of Mario's water pack, which can fire a stream of water or enable him to fly for a limited time, and with additional nozzles unlocked later in the game, propel him very quickly or send him soaring upward like a rocket. Unfortunately, its first ability -- firing a stream of water -- just does not play well at all, requiring you to effectively switch into a first-person mode to fire accurately; quite a shame because the rest of its abilities do work pretty well.

The other problem is with the blue-coin collecting. In order to get all the Shine Sprites (not necessary to complete the game in its entirety, but completionists will want to do it anyway), you need to find blue coins and exchange them. Really, this just ends up getting tedious. I think I stumbled across most of the coins I found, and I certainly didn't feel compelled to hunt any down.

Besides those two points, though, this is a very good Mario game, on the whole. The graphics are top-notch and Mario has lots of cool moves both with and without the water pack. It should definitely be in your Gamecube library.

I think the comment about having to hunt down all those blue coins are quite true. I too have a hard time just trying to find a single one of them. The big problem is that you have to find ten of them . One is tiresome enough, but they are asking for ten in order to exchange a Shine Sprite. The storyline is quite nice, though. The problem with it is that the only thing you can rely on is the waterpack since you can get hurt or burnt in some cases. The things you have to do in order to get a Shine Sprite is pretty difficult. I still agree that you have to have this in your GameCube library.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Gameplay

Weakness: Length

This game was a little short once you really got into it, but it was well worth it. This is comparable if not better to the Mario 64. The jetpack seemed cheesy at first to me too, but it was a great unique game. Especially loved the setting. I recommend this game to any Mario fan, or plain ol' gamers.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Lots of levels, Easy controls

Weakness: Gets boring after a while

Overall this is a good game, has 5 objectives to beat for every level, the controls are good, graphics are not bad, It can be hard to get all of the sprites though, you have to get every blue coin there are(which is like 150) and it can be hard to find them all. Id give this game 4 stars!

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Lots of gameplay, great graphics and sound, the waterpack if quite fun to use, keeps you entertained

Weakness: Quite difficult at times

A worthy successor to the Mario platformers from the past. The story is a little silly, but it's easy to pass on it and get into the gameplay, which is great for a platformer. Definitely have to use your head when working through some of the later levels, as they get very very hard at times.

The graphics are top-notch, showing off the Gamecube nicely, and the same goes for the sound effects.

It's a great game for people of all ages, and a worthy addition to the Gamecube library. A must have.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Cute Graphic, Traditional music with a twist, Filled with many games in a game.

Weakness: Gets kinda complicated with lots gadgets needed to get stuff.

Not a usual Super Mario game, since this time Mario is trying to redeem himself while taking a vacation at the Isle Delfino. Great 3D environment, with cute characters. Overall, a fun entertaining.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Level design, graphics, mechanics

Weakness: no snow world

This is an instant Mario classic. The water pack adds a lot of fun to an already great game. The game plays just like super mario 64. Collect shines instead of stars in this game. Also there are now blue coins hidden throughout the worlds that need to be found. There are three different waterpacks, with the most useful being the hover. The stages without the hover pack are very challenging, but completing them gives a great sense of accomplishment. This game is my favorite game on gamecube.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Fun environments, a few entertaining new moves, awesome "retro" levels. It's a blast just to run around doing crazy tricks using the FLUDD and Mario's repertoire of jumps.

Weakness: Repetitive blue coin quest, cheesy story and dialogue, a few mundane Shine quests, graphics aren't too great apart from water effects.

Super Mario Sunshine is a worthy successor to Super Mario 64, although it's different in a few ways. First of all, you're not going to be seeing the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario is on vacation this time, so while you might see a few Piranha Plants, most of the enemies will be unfamiliar. Also, Mario is equipped with a new tool: his FLUDD water cannon. Using the FLUDD, Mario can hover, rocket into the air, propel himself at high speed, and spray jets of water at enemies.

SMS is slightly more plot-oriented than previous Mario games, but for the most part, the plot doesn't interfere with the classic platforming action. Although you'll be collecting Shine Sprites instead of stars, Sunshine plays very similarly to Super Mario 64, with the FLUDD being the biggest noticeable difference. When the game starts, Mario will be expected to use his FLUDD to clean toxic sludge from the island, but he'll soon be jumping from building to building and fighting massive bosses in classic Mario style.

While Super Mario Sunshine has its dull moments (blue coin collections and the hotel level, to name a few), overall it's a very solid platformer that can be extremely enjoyable. Fans expecting a direct sequel to Super Mario 64 might miss the Mushroom Kingdom, but Sunshine has its own merits. It's one of the best platformers this generation, and it's worth the (now quite low) price of admission.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Oh yeh! A Mario story game~!

Weakness: bit complicated

A 3-D Mario story game. More complicated and richer contents than the old one. Mario can do more things (means you have more to control) and can go to any direction (means you have to figure it out). Great music and graphics. A must-play gamecube advanture game. Oh well, I still feel something is missing in this game; perhaps that's the old game's simplicity and 2-D story line.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Great graphics and story. A great unexpected twist and great gameplay. Great mini games. Strange characters.

Weakness: has a glitch so that if you run into a certain wall you end up walking under water without runing out of breath. You can even take Yoshi.

A fun game with strange enemy and strange character. Fun ne game play. Who ever knew washing could be so much fun.Great for all ages. Chalenging and fun. And you get to ride on a Yoshi without haveing to collect 120 stars or anything like that.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Fun and entertaining, it's a Mario game so why shouldn't it be? Lots of levels to play on, decent storyline as well. Music for the many locations or "worlds" are just right, fit the mood.

Weakness: The Zoom. When moving around a lot, zoom can get way out of focus, hit the C control stick a bunch to make it right, you get used to it though, also Yoshi cannot swim at all.

A very fun game. There's lots of stuff to do, with sprites to collect to turn the Delfino village back to it's original state. Yoshi is in the game but cannot swim in water. The music isn't as good as Super Mario 64, or at least no music as good as inside the castle walls in Mario 64. Or Jolly Roger Bay for that matter. Some of the levels and such are very tricky and frustrating. It takes time, concentration, and practice to overcome those challenges. You'll soon become addicted to finding as many blue coins as possible, 10 of them lets you get a whole sprite. Overall, a fun game that stars one of Nintendo's stars: Mario. Good game and lots of fun.

So bright you need shades

Strengths: Mario on the Gamecube! Lots of levels.

Weakness: More annoyance than previous Marios. Easier to get stuck. Feels less like traditional Mario.

Super Mario Sunshine is an excellent extension of the Mario games. If you like Mario games, you know pretty much what to expect, outside the island vacation theme.

Graphics are great, with lots of use of vibrant color. Even though this was an early Gamecube title, the towns and environments are still engaging and wonderful to behold.

Unlike Mario 64, there's less freedom of what to do. Where you go and what you do is a little more scripted, and it's easier to get stuck on a level or set of levels that you just don't like or find unpleasant, and have nothing else to do.

There is a great sense of height, and flying around and spraying things is almost worth the price of admission itself. The mechanics of the game, controlling the water sprayer to both clean things and fly around, makes playing it fun, and gives it that 'just one more time' feeling.

The bonus stages are often the most inventive levels, as well as the most challenging and frustrating.

No Gamecube should be without it. Great for all ages.

Mario Sunshine

Strengths: fair graphics, cool add-ons when you advance into the game.

Weakness: all the goo!!! I mean ,come on, whenever you get stuck in the goo that is in the water, you have to swim under- water to restrane yourself from getting killed.

This game is very unique story about Mario, who goes on a trip to Isle Delfino, a beautiful island resort with many beaches and places. In this wonderful action-filled game, Mario can run, swim, slide and wall-jump. At the beginning of the game, Mario will obtain a water-pack named Fludd. From then on, Mario nearly always has to rely on Fludd to get around and defeat enemies. He can also solve puzzles, run really fast with the Turbo,(you can get that later in the game and Rocket (you also can get that later in the game. Oh, and you can ride Yoshi in this game as well.

Most people would say other Mario games are better, but Sunshine is great for all ages and is also quite pleasing.

Mario is back to his platforming again

Strengths: Standard Mario game, you know what you're getting.

Weakness: Dual-stick control is a bit clumsy

Mario Sunshine puts a new twist on the standard Mario platformer. Armed with paint, Mario's off to clean up the mischief caused by an imitator. The world is bright and fun, the familiar Mario characters we know and love are back in full force, with new additions.

My only complaint with this otherwise entertaining title is the use of the c-stick (the little yellow analog) seemed a little clumsy in controlling the paint gun. It may have just been my lack of experience with the dual analogs at the time I played this (it was one of my first games for the GC, and I haven't played it much lately), but it's worth noting.

Nintendo Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Good Graphics and Gameplay

Weakness: Some the the challenges are difficult and can get frustrating

Nintendo Super Mario: Sunshine is a fun task based collection game with Mario (of course) as the main character trying to save the day. The game offers a variety of different boards and gadgets, but its still your basic Mario platforming game. Kids will love this game and it should provide a long time of enjoyment as I find certain tasks in the game quite a challenge. If you're a Mario fan, pick this up, especially now that it can be found for less than $20.

A solid platformer for this generation

Strengths: Beautiful water effects, awesome FLUDDless levels

Weakness: Most non-FLUDDless levels are terrible, blue coins

Yeah, so it's not Mario 64, but it's still a solid Mario title. In fact I think the FLUDDless levels pretty much put it above Mario 64. Pretty much the only striking problem with this game is some of the horrendous levels (Pianta Village, the Hotel). Those were simply awful and it was a chore to get shines in them. The second major annoyance was collecting blue coins, simply because some of them appeared only in a specific scenario, so if you wanted them all, you'd have to reenter a level several times to clear an area, which seems ridiculous to me. Otherwise the game is fine, and can be beated with minimal Pianta Village/Hotel/Blue coins visiting/collecting

Super Mario Sunshine

Strengths: Good Story, Another Mario ADventure

Weakness: Bad Camera

Super Mario Sunshine is the first new Mario platformer since Super Mario 64. A whole 6 years to get a new Mario game is a long time to wait, but the game is worth it. Controlling mostly like Mario 64, Sunshine is easy to pick up and playu for fans of the previous title. What hurts the gameplay, however, is the camera, which players spend as must time adjusting as they do controlling Mario. Mario has a water canon called FLUDD in this version where he must make everything clean, and just like Mario 64, there are objects called "shines" that the player must collect in order to beat the game. All in all, a worthy sequel to a fantastic franchise.

Super Mario Sunshine

Strengths: Lots of extras to hunt for, great water effects,

Weakness: Repetitive dialogue from the NPCs, poor camera control

This is overall a solid next step for the Mario franchise. The setting is a bit different, but it adds an aura (or at least a thin veneer) of freshness to the game. The introduction of a new game mechanic called FLUDD (a super-soaker-like water cannon backpack/hoverpack) adds a great deal of mobility to Mario and a corresponding increase in the number of insane jumps and other acrobatics required to accomplish certain tasks.
As you progress through the game you unlock new 'nozzles' for FLUDD, increasing even further your options and allowing access to previously unreachable play areas.

As usual in a Mario game, there are bunches of extras to collect (in this game they are called Shine Sprites). You only need to collect a small fraction to actually complete the game, but what fun is that!

As expected for the first game for the platform the cameras leave a lot to be desired (The Hobbit shares a lot of the same camera difficulties inherent in the first batch of games created for the platform). I noticed the same thing on Mario 64. This isn't a fatal flaw, but it is annoying at times.

The levels are inventive, 'busy', and visually pleasing. Ditto for the boss fights (although chasing Shadow Mario around gets tiresome after about the first two minutes).

As with the other Mario games, its replay value lies mostly in trying for the 100% complete (i.e. collecting all of the Shine Sprites).

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Beautiful graphics and inviting environments, spot on controls, fun, first 3D Mario platformer since Mario 64.

Weakness: Lack of variety, not enough stages, water pack is kind of a gimmick, not as fun as Mario 64.

I was expecting the second coming of Mario 64 when I bought this game but what I got was a game that sorely disappointed. After I got through the initial letdown, I realized the Sunshine is still a great platformer game and despite the shortcomings, is still better then 95% of the other action platformers out there. The new gimmick in the game is the waterpack. You need it essentially for everything, whether that be trying to reach a certain area or cleaning off the chocolaty mess left behind the enemies. As is the norm for every Nintendo game, the control is spot one. The graphics and environment are truly a sight to behold. They just scream out fun! The soundtrack is nice and catchy although not one of Koji Kondo's better efforts. While the worlds are huge and very inviting, they just don't seem as fun as past Mario games. I'm can't pinpoint why, even after a few years of playing this game. I would venture to say that they just aren't as creative and while the water pack is unique, it hampers the true essence of Mario - which is Mario by himself battling and solving puzzles with his basic running, jumping and stomping abilities. Fans of Mario will want to get this game no matter what since this is still the only true 3D platformer of Mario since Mario 64. While it's not as great as Mario 64, it has many redeeming qualities that will keep you coming back many times.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Great action, absolutely wonderful sound and visuals, gameplay draws you in for hours

Weakness: Not enough variety in levels, hokey storyline, at first hard to control

The biggest problem with Super Mario Sunshine for many people is that it is not what they expected: Sunshine is *not* a sequel to Mario 64. I, for one, am glad! Personally, I found Mario 64 difficult to control and draining to play. I truly find Sunshine to be more fun, more compelling, and a joy to play. One difference is the control: while a bit hard to master at first, once you get the hang of it, using the water backpack FLUDD and performing all the moves becomes second nature. My only gripe is that it is sometimes difficult to make jumps--but it is still better than previous games. The story is lame--but that is to be expected with Mario games. The actually gameplay, though, draws you in and the water effects are simply beatiful. There is something about the cheery atmosphere of the island, and the simple satisfaction of removing graffitti that makes this game an easy way to spend an afternoon. highly recommended.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: Entertaining, original, bright and crisp graphics

Weakness: Sometimes too unforgiving

This is 3D platforming game in the vein of Mario N64, although without the chops of that classic game. Fundamentally, Mario Sunshine is a solid game, with at times complex gameplay, interesting graphics, and a unique plot. It just doesn't quite measure up to the very high standard of the Mario series and could have been tweaked in places to allow for easier gameplay. However, it should still be recommended as a good game on its own merits.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: great controls

Weakness: weak story

this game was my first mario game. The gameplay mainly involves jumping on bad guys and shooting them with the waterpack. The jets are quite fun to play around with. The game has great levels, great enemies, but i just wasn't drawn into the game as much as i thought i would have. Recommend to mario lovers but rental would suffice everyone else.

Super Mario: Sunshine

Strengths: It's Super Mario, and all the things that go with it. Good platforming, good graphics, tight controls, nice camera system.

Weakness: The basic formula has been copied endlessly, it might take some time to see how good this game really is. It's not revolutionary.

What can be said about this game? It’s a Super Mario game, get it, get them all. This is unequivocally a good game. Good graphics, fun and tight gameplay, and a nice sense of nostalgia. It’s difficult to say anything specific about this game because nearly all platformers today copy the design of the Mario franchise. The story isn’t so intrigueing that one would play the game for it. I want to say that Mario is a very generic platformer, but not in a bad way. Rather, I would say that Mario games are almost the Platonic Ideal of what platformers should be.

The Water Pack. I can’t say it adds much to the game, but it doesn’t detract from it either. Unfortunately, it feels much like what it is, an apology for not having yet designed the perfect camera system. Aside from ma few puzzles here and there, the Water Pack is simply a way for the player to fudge a bit on those jumps that would otherwise require nearly perfect positioning. If the player gets to rely on it too much, it can slow the game down. This becomes readily apparent in the mini-levels where the Water Pack is taken away. In those levels, the game simply feels much faster.

This game has been bombasted for not being the revolutionary kind of game that Mario 64 was. When people say this, it tends to convey meaning to the listener that was probably not intentioned, namely that Sunshine is not as good as 64. If I had to decide which of the two is better, I would have to go with Sunshine. I would compare the difference to the difference between Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World. In both the cases, the game that came first set the standard of what every other platformer from then on would have to be, and the next took the same ideas and polished them until they gleamed. When you play Sunshine, there is a feeling that you’ve played this before, but it really is done much better the second time around.

Strengths: Great platformer! Reminds me of the Super Mario days!

Weakness: None

Great platformer! Reminds me of the Super Mario days! This is my favorite platformer on Gamecube. It reminds me of Super Mario on Super Nintendo except that the gameplay is three dimensional and the graphics are awesome. A must have for anyone who has a Gamecube or grew up playing the classic Mario games.
