Colin McRae Rally 3Strengths: Very detailed racing sim, numerous tracks to choose from Weakness: Not for the arcade race driver, graphics & sound only passable Colin McRae Rally 3 is for the die-hard rally racing sim fan. This isn't an arcade driver, this is a sim, where cars are bound the the laws of physics and react appropriately. Careful control is rewarded, while not paying attention will end up finishing in last place. There are numerous tracks to pick from, giving some variety the gameplay. Zoom!Strengths: Tight control, nice cars Weakness: Not enough level variety Colin McRae Rally 3 is an odd racing... if it was the only racing game out there, it'd be played by tons of people. It has all that a great racing game needs: lots of really cool cars (even though you have to play for HOURS in order to get anywhere close to the really cool cars) and nice controls that help you to feel like you're actually driving a car, even when you're using a regular control pad. The problem is that Rally 3 is not the only racing game out there, and it's just not on the same level as Gran Turismo 4 or Forza Motorsport. If you only have a little money to spend, it's a great buy, but otherwise, you should save up and buy one of those other, superior racing games. 0% of readers found this review helpful. Strengths: Incredibly detailed physics and handling. Lots of tracks to race.
Weakness: Graphics are bland. Rally racing has limited appeal.
Rally racing hasn't found as large of an audience in the US as it has in Europe. Most Americans have no idea who Colin McRae is. The lack of exposure to this genre of racing is a dissappointing oversight, especially with the quality of rally games lately.
While not as shiny or showy as Rallisport Challenge, Colin McRae Rally 3 has it where it matters most: in the handling of the cars. The detail given to the physics modelling is the core of the gameplay. Cars slide around muddy banks just like you'd expect them to. Slamming on the gas will undoubtedly leave your tires spinning.
The impressive level of fidelity makes everything else in this game a slight disappointment. In the career mode, you race to unlock tracks and cars, but it doesn't feel as rewarding when you win.
For rally fans, this or one of the newer games in the series is sure to satisfy. Arcade racing fans may find themselves frustrated by having to use the brake pedal more often and steering more carefully. Overall it's a good game for its genre.
