Genma Onimusha

Strengths: Action game play, storyline, cinematics, graphics, voice acting

Genma Onimusha is a great action-oriented game with fantastic cinematics and game play. As the hero, Samanuske, you are thrust into an adventure to take out the evil tyrant known as Nobunaga. Early on in your quest, you are assisted by supernatural forces which give you a gauntlet that increases your strength and helps you fight off the hoards of enemies you will face in your quest. In addition to the initial strength increase, the gauntlet enables you to absorb the souls of the enemies you kill, which not only continues to increase your strength, but increases the strength of your weapons as well.

Genma Onimusha was originally released as Onimusha for the Playstation 2. This would be classified as a director’s cut, with a few more features added to it. Since it also is running on the Xbox (more powerful than the PS2), the graphics are a little crisper, and the game runs smoother.

The only thing that I did not like about this game is the controls seem stiff and outdated. But they are usable, just not as great as more recent games. Other than that, this is a terrific game and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good action/adventure game.

Samanosuke's Beginnings

Strengths: Upgraded graphics and features over the PS2 release, high quality Resident Evil-style game, but in a completely different setting

Weakness: Fixed cameras ala older RE games, controls a bit awkward

You can definitely feel echoes of Resident Evil in this game (by the same publisher), but the story and style just feels more interesting than the zombie theme of the RE series.

The graphics look nice for the time the game was made, but it's now pushing three years old, so it can feel a bit dated still.

Gameplay has been improved over the PS2 original, but the new Tug-of-war for green souls can make battle much more complex, and harder if you lose. I'm not sure gamers needed this new aspect to distract them.

It's a good game for the time, but it is older, so the impact is lost a bit. If you can cope with the controls, though, it can be an interesting run.

Strengths: good storyline and graphics

Weakness: control scheme, difficult, short

I didn't make it through the whole game, I could not handle the control scheme well. The storyline is good and I wanted to see what happens but it was very difficult. I think it is hard anyway and the control scheme made it that much harder for me. I would like to try Onimusha 3, which I hear uses the analog sticks. But a pretty good game.

Strengths: Added stuff to the Xbox Version over the Playstation 2 version, excellent graphics

Weakness: Short

Genma Onimusha is a port of Onimusha for the Playstation 2 with some added content and is a very good action adventure game. You control your character Samanosuke very much like Resident Evil with the tank style type control scheme where you press up to move forward, back to make your character step backwards & hold left or right to have your character twist left or right. While you will be solving puzzles like Resident Evil instead of a gun you will be using a sword for close range combat most of the game while also using a bow & arrow from time to time when you like permitting you have arrows. Genna Onimusha improves on the original game with improved difficulty, afew new monsters & a whole new tower to explore close to the end of the game. Although the game is really short it gives players incentive to play the game again with different difficulties, endings & outfits to unlock. I would recommend Genma Onimusha to anyone that likes action adventure games unless they are against the tank styled controls.

Strengths: An enhanced version of a true classic.

Weakness: Some may hate the controls. A bit short.

Before it came out, Onimusha was billed as "Resident Evil with ninjas." That's not at all what this is. Although it's got prerendered backgrounds and roughly the same controls as RE, this is an action game, and it works.

This is a beautiful game, and it's also pretty hard. Fortunately, if you're having just too much trouble with it, an easy mode becomes available. When you finish the game, there's also a new Hard mode added to the Xbox version, so you'll get plenty of challenge out of this one.

If you've already got the PS2 version, this doesn't have enough new features to justify a new purchase, unless you really love it and need more challenge. There's a new multi-level battle area, and a new type of soul that enemies can suck up, giving them super strength. If you get 5 of them, though, you get some super strength of your own... so it's good to save them for boss battles.

This may be short, but the time you'll spend with it is lots of fun. It can be had for pretty cheap now, so I'd say go for it.

Strengths: An improved port of the PS2 version. Good balance of action and puzzle elements.

Weakness: Static camera can lead to some confusing situations.

Genma Onimusha is the first of the Onimusha series to hit the Xbox. Being a port of the PS2 version, you can expect much of the same, with some improvement in graphics. The character designs, levels, and animations all show a level of improvement over the PS2 version.

The action is fun and the puzzles are challenging, but don't ruin the flow of the gameplay. The story is well-written and unique.

Although the series isn't a favorite of mine, this game is well-made and deserves a play.

Weakness: Short

Genma Onimusha is the Xbox version of the original game. The graphics are very good considering that the game came out back in 2002. They aren't as good as what we see now, but they're still more than adequate. The sound is great with a fantastic soundtrack and thankfully, the ability to hear the original Japanese voices rather than the English dub (which is also available.) The gameplay is the same as in the original game, but with several optimizations that make combat more strategic. The game's only real flaw is that it's still a very short game and will only last around 6 hours the first time through. However, that time will be some of the best spent gaming as Genma Onimusha is fantastic.

Genma Onimusha

Strengths: Excellent graphics and storyline setting

Weakness: Game became harder but the flawed controls are the same.

Genma Onimusha is a port of the Playstation 2 game Onimusha: Warlords. New content was added to the xbox version but most of it wasn't anything major except for the increased difficulty level. The only problem with the harder difficulty is that Capcom didn't bother improving the controls as well so expect to die in quite a few frustrating fights.

The good news is that the game still looks nice after all these years and the main game is well worth a playthrough. Too bad none of the other Onimusha titles made their way to the Xbox.

A solid, entertaining purchase.

Strengths: Good action

Weakness: Can be very difficult

Capcom has done a nice job with this action-packed, samurai adventure. There are stronger enemies and some really interesting new areas to check out. Lots of action and nice looking overall. The only issue I had with this game is the level of difficulty, as sometimes this one can be a bit tough. Definitely pick up if you have the opportunity and the cash.

Strengths: Its Onimusha on XBOX, upgraded graphics, and extra parts.

Weakness: Its a port with little upgrades.

Genma Onimusha is a action/adventure game for XBOX. You play as a samurai who has been given a gauntlet that sucks souls to purge the demons that have invaded the world. The game plays like a samurai resident evil game. This is a port of the PS2 version with upgraded visuals and a few extra areas. If you need to own one version this one would be the best.

Give the game 3 stars for just being a port of an already existing game.

Strengths: Gameplay is good

Weakness: Controls a little bit awkward

This game is actually pretty cool. It's a lot of sword fighting with a bit of strategy involved. This entire series is actually relatively good. The controls on the Xbox version are kind of awkward. Don't really know how else to explain it. It seemed to play more smoothly for the Playstation. Good game overall though.

Strengths: Great combat system. Interesting story and enemies. Looks great.

Weakness: Can be difficult. Especially at first.

You play Sanuske, a Samurai in feudal Japan who is fighting a horde of undead demons. There is a great story with interesting characters and enemies. This game looks gorgeous and oozes style.

But it's not all flare. There is a great combat system. The swordplay can be considered a dueling" style where you have to attack, guard, and counter while fighting. This can take awhile to master. I thought the game was especially hard at first. But after a few hours of gameplay (and a lot of dying), when I finally got use to the system, I found combat most satisfying.

Another nice mechanic is the ability to absorb the souls of your fallen enemies. This can give you special attacks, heal, and replenish magic. But be careful. Your enemies can also absorb souls and become stronger.

This game is more difficult than your average game. But it is very satisfying once you play for awhile. I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Battle System Upgrade System

Weakness: Somewhat Repetitive

Genma Onimusha is a great port from the Playstation 2 version of the game. If you don't have a Playstation 2, this game is definitely worth picking up for the prices you can find it at online. Fighting with demons and stealing their souls is really quite intense. Upgrading when you've stolen so many souls really works well. Sometimes you get a little frustrated playing the game because you will notice it's the same thing over and over in different areas. With the interesting story line you hopefully won't notice this. If you can find it cheap pick this up for sure.

Genma Onimusha

The first release of the Onimusha legacy debuted on the PS2 as Onimusha: Warlords early in 2001. It was received well amongst the gaming community, with perhaps the only complaints being that the game was either a bit too short or a bit too easy. Genma Onimusha

I had my doubts about Genma Onimusha. I wasn't a big fan of the original, PS2 incarnation. I couldn't see what all the hooplah was about. It wasn't much of a challenge, the controls felt stiff, and it ended too soon. Capcom has tweaked the gameplay, slipped in a handful of new enemies, and added some new wrinkles to make for a much stronger gaming experience. Hallelujah, I've been converted!
