Dark Cloud

Strengths: + good graphics + building your own cities + charming characters

Weakness: - repetitive gameplay - hard - dungeons

Dark Cloud is so charming and reminiscent of old 16 bit that it's hard not to like it. But ultimately the repetitive dungeons and the difficulty of the game sinks in and almost ruins the game.

Remember that this game came out as a launch title sometime in 2001 or so the graphics are somewhat outdated. Models aren't very detailed but they're still great to look at mostly because of the character designs. Even the dungeons/caves which are repetitive are nicely done.

Being that Dark Cloud is a dungeon crawler this game is quite hard in the beginning and ending and requires a lot of time spent levelling up. Add to this an odd weapons system, where weapons have HP and with every use it diminishes (if you don't fix it, they'll eventually break and disappear!) this game is definitely NOT for beginners. Early on you'll spend lots of time travelling back and forth from the dungeons to the town in order to fix your weapons, hopefully players are careful enough that they don't get stuck in a level without a weapon. The pacing of the game is really hindered by the weapons system because it forces you to constantly monitor your weapons and hesitant to use them.

The best parts of the game are the character designs and the ability to build your own towns/cities. A Dark Genie was released and it tried to destroy the world but the fairie saved the towns by locking them into spheres. When you enter dungeons, you'll encounter these spheres and the more you find the bigger your building inventory becomes. Then you get to decide how to layout your town (like a simple sim city, but without the economy, etc.) There's quite a few details that you can add like trees, bridges, rivers and each house has their own little details so it's quite satisfying to turn an empty plot of land into a big city.

If you have the time to invest in Dark Cloud it can be really fun. And that's also the weakness of the game.

Dark Cloud

Strengths: it's so unique thats why it got such a high rating for me.

Weakness: There is slight repitition.

This game stands out like an elephant in a pack of mice.
Though some said it would be the "zelda killer" id agree
BUT for everyone else they would laugh if i said said it.
The idea about building your own surroundings is so obvious it should have been games such as zelda. But it wasnt,so Dark Cloud got it.Now the flaws, there isnt too many but theres one major on repitition. The dungeons get boring.
Also the u.s version added things like 18 new monsters and
and a different weapon system making it easier to understand. If you can get by the flaws it is an adventure that you should at least take a look at,hey at least its something new.

Dark Cloud

Strengths: Good fighting system, kool weapon advancment system.

Weakness: Mediocre story line, bad and repetitive dungeons.

When I first played Dark Cloud, I was totally involved. The enemies, the fighting system, and the weapon advancment were all excellent. 2 weeks later, it's lost it's charm. The weapon system is good, but not enough.

The storyline is this: the "Dark Genie" attacks, but the faerie king (what a lousy name) somehow puts away the towns into "Atla" spheres, but they end up in dungeons. So, Toan must save the Atla spheres, and the town.

Which brings me to the worst part, the dungeons. After the 30th hour of venturing through dungeons that look EXACTLY the same, it begins to lose it's charm.

Overall, Dark Cloud is a decent game. Just don't expect any state of the art graphics or role-playing game experiences.

Dark Cloud

Strengths: okay graphics

Weakness: bad plot, horrible dungeons, too hard, nothing of slight interest

Don't buy this game. There's nothing special about it and it only gets harder. I gave up on this game because it was so bad. A waste of money.

Too Difficult

Strengths: cute graphics

Weakness: very, very, very hard

I really wanted to like this game but the developers just made it too dificult. Instead of a simple action rpg, they incorporated a cumbersome health meter for weapons also so that everytime you hit an enemy, the weapon degrades. Yes this makes it a bit more realistic but this is a game!

I couldn't stand it and got bored/frustrated after playing through nine dungeons (still in the first level). If I had lots of free time I may attempt to pick it up again.

DARK CLOUD

Strengths: excellent game play; good enemy variety and sound effects

Weakness: only a limited number of background songs during the game; . no voice acting ; character dialog is in text form ; repetitive dungeons; weapons will break after while

This game is just like Zelda in the exploration and dungeon quests and like the Super Nintendo game ActRaiser in terms of the overhead world building; you will fight in dark dungeons and kill monsters in order to collect treasure; you will search
and look for Atla spheres to further enhance your characters abilities; combat is similar to the Zelda games with a lock-on and strafe strategy to destroy your enemies; you get different characters to control like fat Goro with a huge hammer and Chao the cat; you can swap between these characters at will and there's a total of six in the game; you get many weapons that have powerful elemental attributes like a fire, wind, and Ice

Definitely Not the Zelda Killer

Strengths: Novel world re-building elements. Variety of upgradeable weapons.

Weakness: Almost no character development whatsoever. Broken weapons. Thirst.

For one of the first generation RPG’s on the PS2, it was a good try. The game is about the recently released Dark Genie destroying the world but not before the remnants of the world are saved and encapsulated in spheres by the powers that be. You are Toan and it is your task to re-build the world as it was from these spheres. As you travel through the land re-building towns and landscape, you acquire additional party members who primarily serve as weapon choices for the player.

The gameplay is a hack and slash RPG in the vein of Zelda with an annoying twist. Weapons and thirst have to be micromanaged thus wearing the actual gameplay down. The most frustrating thing is to upgrade your weapon to the max only to have it break and making it useless. While these real world elements are good in theory, they do not translate well to games and only detract from the overall gameplay experience.

Decent game but I would highly recommend the sequel which corrects many of the “flaws” and provides a better experience.

Wasted Potential

Strengths: reminiscent of 16-bit roleplaying games, charming characters, building your own town

Weakness: weapons break if you don't fix them constantly which slows down progression of the game to a crawl.

Dark Cloud is a game of wasted potential. Reviews liken it to Zelda but actually it's very similar to another outstanding 16-bit Super Nintendo game, Soul Blazer.
The story starts out with a general bent on power, releasing an evil genie who destroys the world. Before everything is destroyed though, the fairy king transported all the towns and people into magical spheres. Now it's your job to go deep into caves and forests to collect these spheres and revive everyone. One of the coolest parts of this game is collecting these spheres (town parts) and transforming a barren land into a lively town. And you get to choose where to put the houses, stores, trees, lakes, etc.

The characters are distinctly designed and although the game was released in 2000, the graphics (although plain) still look pretty nice today. Like the graphics, the music and sounds are simple but they get the job done and fits in with the game.

Unfortunately the weapon upgrade system in Dark Cloud is so annoying that it can make the most patient gamer want to throw the controller down and stop playing. In the game each weapon has its own "health" meter. Eveytime you hit an enemy, the meter goes down and if you're not careful and let it reach zero, the weapon breaks and disappears completely. Besides your weapons, you have to keep an eye on your character's health and their thirst level. So there's a lot of babysitting in this game and really slows down your progression in the game. A level that would normally take 30 minutes to beat will stretch to an hour or more.
