Mortal Kombat: Deception CE (Xbox)

Strengths: Good gameplay, good graphics, diverse gameplay modes, good multiplayer, online capable, immense amount of unlockables

Weakness: Konquest mode almost overbearing in number of items to unlock

MK:D is one of the better MK games to come in quite some time. First off, it looks and sounds great, with great graphics, great environments and impressive sound and voice acting. The single player action in Kombat mode is the same as it's always been, though in multiplayer, the game is more enjoyable, especially online. There's Chess mode, which works like chess using MK characters, which is a nice diversion from normal play. There's Puzzle Kombat, which works sort-of-like Tetris. The main game is Konquest, where different games are played to earn koins for unlocking items, and there's an immense amount of items to unlock. Online play comes with the combat, chess and puzzle modes, and it's pretty well done.

The CE comes with an extra disc with some bonus items, including the first Mortal Kombat game. Only real collectors will want the extras from the CE version.

MK fans will like this game, which has been done pretty well.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: many modes

Weakness: nothing

this game is chock full of fun modes. You get normal, puzzle, chess, and online play. I have yet to play konquest so, i can't comment on that. This game has a ton of characers and loads of unlockables. I got it a couple of weeks ago and haven't put it down yet.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Live play, lots of extra features and unlockable

Weakness: As a pure fighter, not as good as Soul Calibur or even the DOA series, Kollector's Edition bit of a let down.

For me, Mortal Kombat has been unable to regain the fun from the first 3 games. The transition to 3d has not been kind at times, but Midway continues to plug away. Deception is easily an improvement over its predecessor. And the editions of puzzle, chess and konquest give the game much more playtime. For some, these may just be brief gimmicks, but konquest does need to be played if you want to unlock all the extras. If konquest were a game unto itself, it would probably be 1, maybe 2 stars if generous. You are a fighter in training in a 3d world, that is not much to look at, not very well acted and movement itself feels wooden. Admittedly, the first few (or dozen) times you knock out a person is enjoyable, especially if they swing back at you. But much of the time is spent either getting item x to bring to person y or hanging around an area at a certain time. The graphics for entering buildings are downright deplorable.
Still, the meat of the game is the fighting itself, and it plays true to its arcade roots. If you have spent a lot of time with Soul Calibur, DOA or VF, the button pressing and combos may strike you as odd. The timing is different and feels much more sequenced (which I found to be a negative). There is nothing revolutionary here, just beating up your opponents and then putting in the correct sequence to finish him or her.
Lastly, the Kollector's edition comes in a cardboard slipcase, with a second disc containing some extras and the original Mortal Kombat. Unfortunately, the case is a normal xbox case single disc case. So this bonus disc comes loose in the case in a paper sleeve. Seeing how well some of the other collector's editions are put together, such as Doom 3 or Chaos Theory, this is disappointing.
Overall, for Mortal Kombat fans, there is plenty here to pull you along, and people who never quite "got" Mortal Kombat, well, you probably aren't even reading this.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Looks Good. Interesting Arenas. Good Multiplayer. A couple nice game modes.

Weakness: Rote Single Player. A tad too much complexity for its own good.

Mortal kombat Deception is basically a 3D Fighter. However, it has a few other unique modes hat should be mentioned. It has a puzzle fighter mode that is great. It also has a Battle Chess mode that is fun too. But the core of the game is the 3D action.

This game is great when you're with some friends playing. At time the combat gets a littler over the top. With so many moves and things to interfere in the match, you can get annoyed. It's a pain when in the middle of a fight a death trap springs up and you lose the match. All this stuff seems like a cool idea to develop but doesn't add much fun to the game. It almost detracts.

As for the single player portion, it's the same as in a thousand other fighters, so don't expect anything special.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Different modes

Weakness: boring

This game was kind of dissapointing. The different game modes were fun but the fighting didn't really bring anything new. The fatalities are cool but the series is getting kind of old now. Difficulty is also pretty hard.

Bloody good

Strengths: TONS of stuff to do

Weakness: Not as good as other AAA fighters

Mortal Kombat Deception has an absolute pile of stuff to do. There is just an absolutely crazy amount of unlockables (movies, commentary, outfits, moves, modes, items, codes, etc) and there are so many different game modes you can play, ranging from Kombat Chess to a Mortal Kombat version of Super Puzzle Fighter. The Collector's Edition is an excellent value, considering you get even more stuff... if there's any downside, it's that only the most devoted of players will ever see even half of the stuff in the game. It also fails to live up to the calibur of other high class fighters, like Virtua Fighter 4 or Soul Calibur II... Recommended for fans of the series, or people with plenty of time to devote to a game.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: more characters, more fatalities, more modes of play, online mode.

Weakness: Konquest mode.

Basically, if you liked Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance then there is no doubt that you will love MK: Deception. Deception adds more fatalities (2 per character) and brings back plenty of memorable MK characters. The fatalities are much more brutal and creative when compared to the last game also.

Midway adds more variety by offering a Puzzle Kombat Mode, Chess Kombat Mode, and a Konquest mode. The different modes are nothing in comparison to the main game, but they do try to take the MK universe in a different direction. Konquest is probably the weakest mode, and, sadly, this is where you will unlock most of the hidden characters and gain most of your koins. It is impressive that they managed to add voiceovers for every character in Konquest mode though. In short, this is definitely a pickup if you liked Deadly Alliance.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's

Strengths: Graphics, sound, fatalities, Original Mortal Kombat arcade game, numerous modes

Weakness: None

Mortal Kombat: Deception is a great fighting game. It contains a great mix of old characters from the previous series, and new characters as well. There are plenty of unlockable features as well (i.e., characters, stages, etc.) by earning points through the numerous game modes and using these points to unlock tombstones from the Mk crypt which each contains a secret unlockable. Each character has 3 fighting styles you can switch between, and one of the styles let’s the character equip a weapon.

The best feature I believe that is part of the Collector’s Edition is the inclusion of Mortal Kombat 1 – the arcade version. It looks to me that the game is almost a perfect edition of the arcade version including fatalities and special moves. The arcade game does tend to show its age though on the Xbox. I highly recommend a purchase of this game, especially the collector’s version for the additional game.

Flawed, but still good fun

Strengths: death traps are a lot of fun; filled to the brim with extra features; solid XBOX Live support; great Mortal Kombat atmosphere with excellent nods to the classic games

Weakness: the actual gameplay is not as tight as classic MK; some basic fighting elements are too exploitable; Konquest mode can get monotonous

Mortal Kombat Deception builds off of the "MK: Deadly Alliance" engine, adding some new gameplay elements and a ton of extras to fully flesh out the package. You get all the violence you'd expect from a "Kombat" title - considerably more than the previous game, in fact, with two fatalities and a suicide move available for each character. And then there's the death traps; knock the opponent in the air from the right location, and they'll go sailing into some sort of nasty device, or pit, or an endless void - in any case it means instant death and the end of a round. This adds an air of unpredictability to each fight, as any near-death opponent can score the win out of nowhere with a well-placed blow. Due to the new death traps, positioning becomes a much more important factor in each fight.

In the end, though, Deception is best suited for "casual" play, as the more serious "high-level" play usually boils down to abusing a couple of simple moves over and over again until one person makes a mistake. Unfortunately there are too many exploitable bugs to provide a truly rewarding "competitive" experience, if that's what you're looking for. But ignorance is bliss in my case - I've intentionally avoided learning about all the bugs, infinite combos, and whatnot - so I can still jump into a few rounds with a like-minded opponent and have a good time.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Graphics, crazy combos and fatalities, all the extras, online play, the original MK1 included.

Weakness: Konquest mode a little shallow, cropped widescreen mode.

It's been a hit or miss proposition for the Mortal Kombat franchise ever since MK2 was released back in the mid 1990s. I believe Deception is probably the best in the series since Mortal Kombat II. This brings the series back closer to the roots and has all the gore and blood we all love. The backgrounds are really interesting and the sound is good. More importantly, the game plays really well. Some may call it shallow but I don't think anyone confuses what Mortal Kombat is all about - I think even Midway would concede they are not trying to live up to Street Fighter standards. This is Mortal Kombat. Puzzle Kombat is bad rip off of Puzzle Fighter from Capcom. The Chess Kombat game is an interesting take on chess. I enjoyed the extra bonuses a lot but they're nothing special. The inclusion of online play will really extend the life of the game. The support of widescreen is great but the one problem is that the screen gets cropped when you're using that feature. This sucks and it appears you are zoomed too close to the action. If you're a fan of Mortal Kombat, then you MUST get this game.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Diverse modes, good online, lots to unlock.

Weakness: Several large unlocks are almost impossible to find on your own.

Mortal Kombat has always been known for its over-the-top violence, and Deception lives up to that. But in addition, there are enough other modes to make this worthy of a try for people who aren't even into Mortal Kombat to begin with.

First, there's regular Kombat. This is simple one-on-one fighting, where you and a friend pick characters and duke it out. Every character has two or three fighting styles, which you can switch between at any time by pressing L. This makes it almost like you're controlling three different characters at once, and adds a bit of depth to an otherwise simple game.

Then, there's the Konquest mode. Konquest is a simplistic RPG type of game, where you follow the entire life of the character Shujinko. You get quests, fight people, and learn all of the moves of almost every character. It's a great place to start, and gives plenty of Koins to unlock things in the Krypt. You win Koins for pretty much everything you do in this mode, and for winning in other modes, and spend them to unlock things like production art, music tracks, and even new characters.

If that weren't enough, there are two more modes that are turning out to be my favorites. There's Puzzle Kombat, which is just Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo but with Mortal Kombat characters. Any excuse to have an Xbox Live puzzle game is fine by me. There's also Chess Kombat, which has you taking turns moving fighters on a game board in an attempt to take out the Leader. It's loosely based on real chess, but there are new rules and abilities that make it fresh and exciting. That's also Live playable.

The only real problem with this game is that many of the unlockables, especially characters, are pretty much impossible to find without a walkthrough. One requires you to open a chest that's in one spot of one world in Konquest, but only at a certain time of day. There's pretty much no chance you'd find it if you didn't know about it ahead of time. Unlocking things in the Krypt with Koins is fun, but the ones that require keys found in absurd locations are a bit ridiculous.

If you don't mind using a strategy guide to see how to unlock characters, this is a great game. Plenty to play, plenty to unlock, and it's all on Live.

Mortal Kombat: Deception Collector's Edition

Strengths: Good graphics, LOTS to unlock

Weakness: Fighting is incredibly hard to get used to

Game is OKAY. Graphics and Gore are great. It seems like it got a lot of hype for a basic fighting game, with the Mortal Kombat name. Bonus disc is decent, Mortal Kombat original is on it and that's always good to bring old times back. All in all it was worth the 30 bucks I spent.
