Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War

Strengths: Incredible action on XBox Live.

Weakness: Slightly old game.

The age of this game shows a little in the graphics. The sound and online competition more than make up for it with numerous levels and types of games to play. It is one of the best online games right now. Highly recommended.

A Solid FPS

Strengths: Good graphics Great gameplay WWII Setting

Weakness: Graphics a little bland

In Return to Castle Wolfenstein you play a soldier armed to the teeth in a good vs. evil plot. While the story is anything but original, it does keep you somewhat interested and find out what happens next. This game is a solid first person shooter, it is not bad nor is it outstanding. It would be "average" in that if you like fps you will enjoy this game, but don't go in expecting a HALO or Half-Life 2. The controls, music, and gameplay are what you would expect in a fps and this game has a pretty descent campaign that will last you well over 10 hours. The challenge is pretty good as well, at least when I was playing on normal mode. The only score I deduct from this game is the graphics, while not terrible, is kinda bland in that the XBOX is capable of much better graphics than displayed in this game. All in all, this is a solid fps and I recommend this title.

CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN

Strengths: excellent graphics and gameplay

Weakness: stealth missions can get frustrating at times

This game is one of the top first person shooters out there and still hold its own against the many other shooter games that are out today. It has excellent graphics and a lot of detail is put in the surrounding environments and different stages you play in. Stages vary from a desert tomb in Egypt to the quiet and idyllic countryside in Europe. You have an assortment of weapons to fight with such as pistols, machine guns and sniper rifles. Your enemies will range from ordinary German soldiers and officers to experimental monsters and rotting zombies. Game play also varies from simple running and gunning to quiet stealth levels where you have to sneak a forward slowly and avoid detection or else you'll have to restart the entire mission. This game also has a great X box Live component where you can play as different classes of the military such as soldier or a medic and support your team online against another opposing group of players. The game story is also great and draws you in and holds your interest and makes you want to finish it all the way in one sitting. I highly recommend getting this game because of all of the great story and drama you will get out of it.

Fast moving, action packed game that's lots of fun

Strengths: Entertaining, smooth game play. Excellent graphics. Online multiplayer.

Weakness: Moves so fast may occasionally get nausious, weapon selection can be difficult with manay weapons.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a game that feels and looks like it was released much later than its 5/1/2003 release date. I have other similar games released within 6 months of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and none of them are as graphically or technically advanced.

In the game you are a WWII American soldier sent on a mission to infiltrate an enemy experimentation program that is trying to develop super soldiers, with robotics and Dr.Frankenstein-like reanimation techniques. It is a great blending or history and fantasy that provides an interesting and entertaining game story.

It is surprising how smooth this game plays. Especially since it moves so quickly. I have other FPS WWII games, and none of them have characters that move nearly as fast. You practically fly through this game. It can be sort of a problem sometimes, it occasionally makes me nauseous. This is especially so when the character moves when crouched. When you move the character when crouched the entire screen rocks back and forth. This combined with the quick movement always makes me nauseous, so I try to avoid that move as much as possible.

I don’t really have to many dislikes about this game. One would be the occasional dizziness, another would be the method of weapon selection. It can be a little difficult when trying to do quickly. To choose a weapon you scroll up and down through a list by pressing either B or A. This works great when you only have 2 or 3 weapons to choose from, however, toward the end of the game when you carry almost every weapon it can be difficult to select the desired weapon quickly.

The online multiplayer is a great feature of this game. There is new free content to download, plenty of maps and game types to choose from, and still a bunch of people to play with. The offline split-screen multiplayer seems to be lacking though. You can only play through a map that you have completed already, and only cooperatively. You also cannot save the multiplayer game.

Overall this is a great game. It’s entertaining and imaginative, has plenty of maps, game play is fast and smooth, and graphic are wonderful. The few minor flaws hardly take any fun from this game. It’s a great game well worth the purchase.

.

Strengths: great fun in Xbox Live, excellent graphics

Weakness: none

Return to Castle Wolfenstein ranks among the few really good shooters that one is ever going to play, right up there Doom 3 and 007 Nightfire. The graphics are top-notch along with the voice acting and it's just great fun to run around shooting evil Nazis, undead zombies, and cyborg monsters. You have the standard fare for first person shooters: pistol, a shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, and other weapons of deadly destruction. The story of the game basically boils down to the enemy Germans trying to use evil magic and supernatural forces to turn the tide of World War Two to their favor. You alone are mankind's only hope in preventing this from happening. You get to fight in many different locales and stages such as Egypt with its tombs and the desert, and later, Germany within the Nazis secret labs. It is here where you will see the cybernetic horrors that the Germans are trying to build. This game is even more fun in X box Live, where you get to play as four different soldier classes like a medic who can revive his fallen comrades

Usually PC games ported to consoles lose something....

Strengths: All the action/excitement of the PC version, with additional levels and content, online/multiplayer support, Xbox exclusive co-op mode, includes original Wolfenstein 3D as unlockable, budget price

Weakness: Dated graphics, can be tough to find online match players anymore, short single player campaign, lost in a sea of other FPS on Xbox

Many PC games lose something in translation to consoles (often graphics fidelity, online support, level cohesion, etc.), but RtCW: Tides of War actually improves upon the PC original with new levels, a more fleshed-out story, an exclusive co-op mode and full Live and link multiplayer support.

If you enjoy first person shooters and own an Xbox, you have no shortage of decent titles to play (with many more coming all the time). However, Tides of War takes the traditional World War 2 shooter environment and adds a bit of the supernatural through Nazi experimentation.

It's too bad that Tides of War has been all but forgotten with the flood of quality shooters on Xbox these days (Doom 3, Half-life 2, Far Cry: Instincts, Halo 2, etc.) Still, Tides of War provides a solid single and multiplayer experience for a budget price, and killing Nazis never gets old.

Fun, but getting dated

Strengths: Quality shooter. Excellent online.

Weakness: Shows it's wear with many, many more excellent shooters to arrive since Wolfenstein

When this game came out for Xbox, it was hailed as one of the best online shoooters around. It's still a fun game and it's online is also good, but getting harder to find matches. The original Wolfenstein, of course, was a classic in its time. Perhaps the same can be said of this game. Now, however, it's completing with games like Halo 2, Far Cry Instincts and even Timesplitters: Future Perfect for the online shooter crown. It's fallen a bit behind in that regard. However, it's single player is still worth you're time if you find this in the bargain bin. And the previously mentioned games are still up there a bit in price, so if you're looking for some cheap fun -- can usually find it for about $8.99 or less used -- grab Wolfenstein, it won't disappoint.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Strengths: Gameplay, Xbox Live, Enemy AI

Weakness: Slightly dated graphics, port of an old game

Return of Castle Wolfenstein is an excellent game. Although the graphics are a little outdated and it is mainly a port of the PC game released years ago, the gameplay is very solid and the enemy AI is fairly competitive. You will see enemies take cover from fire as they try to better their position to take you out.

The real meat of the game can be found in its Xbox Live features. There are numerous modes that you can play online including deathmatch and objective based games. One of the best features of the Xbox Live feature is the stat tracking, which wil detail the points and kills you have accumulated all the way to how much time you have played online. Overall it is a great game and I would highly recommend it.

Wolfenstein 3D: Updated for a NEW generation

Strengths: A triumphant retelling of the original "Wolfenstein 3D" game.

Weakness: The fact that this game took several years in the making and was only released in 2003.

Where to start?

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides Of War is definitely one of the XBox library's strongest titles.

ID Software really put copius amounts of efforts into this game, that you'll totally feel you're getting your money's worth.

From what I can surmise so far, this game has everything that a First Person Shooter fan can think of.

The really surprising element is the fact that you fight in the World War II era with nothing more than the weapons of that time. No futuristic guns, no futuristic time traveling beasts, just you, your chaingun and a whole bunch of bad guys to waste, all in beautifully smooth, textured colors that only the XBox can provide.

Now that this game is part of the XBox Platinum Hits lineup, this game is definitely affordable and well worth the money you pay for it.

You will not be disappointed.

Wolfstein rocking

Strengths: Great multiplayer

Weakness: Story is short and abit boring.

If you played the original classic on your pc (or jaguar like I did). You be surprised that ID made a great great keeping the original story intact.

The controls are halo like and the action/gameplay are smooth. Overall you the story is good but the multiplayer action is were its at. Enjoy.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War Xbox

Strengths: Xbox Live and Action

Weakness: Graphics seem dated compared to games like Halo

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War is a port of the same game from the PC and while there's nothing groundbreaking with this action game, it does provide a solid FPS title for your Xbox and is a blast to play on Xbox Live. Ability to save at any point is a nice bonus too. If you're an old school fan of the original (I used to play it back on my Apple IIe) or looking for a budget priced FPS title for the Xbox, you've found your game.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War

Strengths: Great action and great story. Not to mention the countless weapons. Enemy AI is fantastic. Co-op play!

Weakness: Graphics are a little outdated. I do not have Xbox Live so that is a weakness for me.

I just bought this game and I have been having a lot of fun with it. Co-op play is a blast and I would recommend this game to anyone.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War

I must admit that I’m old enough to have played the PC’s instant classic Wolfenstein 3D and enjoyed every minute of it. So I was particularly thrilled by the fact that several years later, a new game found itself on the PC with today‘s advanced gaming technology. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War now finds itself on the Xbox and your game-loving reviewer has reverted back to that...
