Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Good Auctionhouse System, Job/Subjob creates some interesting combinations, Relatively Fast GM (Game Master) Responses, Great Chat interface.

Weakness: Long Waits for Party, Long hours needed, Overcamped areas, Lack of Soloability, Quests offer little rewards, Messed up Economy, PS2 Version's Graphics signifigantly lower than PC Version, $$$.

I just stumbled upon this and realized that there is no real review for this game up here so I decided to throw in a contribution. I had played FFXI for nearly a year and reached lvl 66 for my Main black Mage job and reached around 30 for various other jobs like Thief, White Mage and tried out most the jobs except Beast Master, Bard, And Dark Knight. This game was my first MMORPG which I never planned to get because I don't particularly like monthly fees but my friends bought it for me Last Christmas so I decided to try it out. The game itself is pretty confusing at first. I remember first entering the world not knowing what to really do. The Initial town I started in (Bastok) was rather dull looking and the Guttersburg Area I started in was a big dry wastedump. Upon entering other areas you see alot more variety. For the Leveling System, you can usually solo (with the exception of beastmaster which is purely solo) up to lvl 11 effectively on average for most jobs. Then from then on the only decently effective way to party is to form a Party. In order to form a party you need to have certain specific elements starting with a tank (takes damage) and a healer. From then on you can fill it up at these earlier levels however you like. At early levels it could take awhile to find parties but it is not so bad. EXP at these levels comes relatively decent if you're in a good party. However from previous games before MMORPG the time spent on games totally shifted than what i'm used to. Instead of play hours you are entering into Play DAYS. I think when I finally quit I logged on 116 Playdays. Given some where spent overnight bazaaring or leaving my character idle, i'd say a pretty damn huge chunk of that was actually playing. So if you plan to even get close to lvl 75 (Max) expect to spend ALOT of time. Towards the later levels (30+) it is harder to find parties and even harder at 60+. At these levels EXP starts to come in slower and the Penalty for dying gets even worse since it is percentage based on the exp required to get to the next lvl. Around past lvl 60 when I got all my AF (Artifact Armor) from very tedious quests. I really lost much of the motivation to play. Leveling started getting extremely repetitive and you could be Looking for a party for hours end and not get one. There is little to do at this level while you wait because soloability is very much null at this point. The lowest Level (easy prey) that will give you exp will totally slaughter you unless your beastmaster. I am currently playing Everquest II which has a much more friendly leveling system so far with no delevling and more soloability options so far(lvl 25 paladin), thoug I see the soloability degrading. The chat interface in FFXI is one of the areas that really shine and some of the music (like in sancturary of Zi Tah) is quite good. The Graphics on the PS2 look dated (I tried it out during E3 on the ps2) and grainy compared to the PC unfortunetly but it is still playable. The chat interface may be a bit degraded due to the lower resolution. I never played the game on a gamepad, but a keyboard is a defininate must of course. After awhile of play everything will become intuitive. The current economy when I quit the game was rather inflated due to rusty cap fishing bots which makes even the low level items at the auction house become expensive. Also you cannot expect to earn nearly enough gil through normal play and exping therefore you have to dedicate a serious amount of time for accumulating wealth (camping notorious monsters, farming, or crafting) which can be tedious. And usually crafting you have to invest quite a bit before you can even start making money. WE're talking in the 100,000's of gil. Traveling in the game is tedious because only white Mages only get teleports at lvl 36+. Black mages are allowed warp which sends them to thier homepoint at around lvl 18. But expect to spend alot of time simply walking or traveling which is a bit annoying. I certainly have mixed feelings about this game because there were moments I enjoyed playing and moments which I absolutly loathed and seeing how it sucked up so much of my life is both a positive and negative thing. Mostly negative since I could have been more productive, but it was a fun experience a good amount of the time. If you are a more casual gamer, i'd strongly suggest something like World of Warcraft. If your a diehard FF fan you will find a bunch of stuff to enjoy like chocobo riding (at lvl 20).

Fianl Fantasy XI w/ HDD

Strengths: Preloaded on HDD

Weakness: Takes up alot of HDD space; HDD not really supported at all

Final Fantasy XI is the first online Fantasy for the PS2. It is only available with the purchase of the HDD. The game itself is actually quite straightforward as you need to complete your quest in the Final Fantasy Universe. This time however, the game was made where you will need the help of others playing the game online as well. The game is expensive, as there is a monthly fee of $12 after the 1st free month. Also, creating another character is an additional fee on top of that. This is also the only way to get the HDD, which after a year of being released has only been taken advantage of by very few games.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Awesome sounding multi-player capabilities, alot like Diablo II. More people in each game and awesome graphics. Of course its a Final Fantasy so some people just like it for that.

Weakness: Ummm... A little pricy, I am used to free online play and personally think paying to play online is stupid. Everything else is great :)

Final Fantasy XI is a great game! Worth the $2,000,000,000,000 (exaggeration) dollars to play it. The online play is sweet, but I dont like the idea of paying for it. However it is still a great game. So buy it! NOW! IT ROCKS!

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: It is the biggest and probably the greatest Final Fantasy. And you can also buy expansion packs.

Weakness: It cost alot, and it fuc**ng sucks that you have to pay to play

I think it will b pretty good just because Sqauresoft is doing it. If you have the money buy it, if not work really hard for it.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Will be best game EVER for PS2

Weakness: NONE

Final Fantasy XI will come out before FFX-2 BECAUSE IT ALREADY IS OUT IN JAPAN. FFX-2 is still under development.

It doesn't really matter cause both games are gonna rule.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Its Final Fantasy

Weakness: online pay

If this game requires you to go online and pay for it then I will be extremely sorry to say I will not be buying this installment. Pay for play online is stupid.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: PREVIEW BEFORE GAME RELEASE Looks like Final Fantasy X online, graphics look sharp, characters are different as usual.

Weakness: Rumors are it's ONLY ONLINE. Sounds wasteful to me since the internet capability hasn't come out yet.

Looks like an OK game. Get it if ya want I guess. I will only because I want the full collection. Final Fantasy XI might not go beyond what you imagined but if they proceed to Final Fantasy XII, I imagine that will be cool!

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Sure it would be cool

Weakness: Its not even the next FF in development

Final Fantasy XI will happen, but before it does SquareSoft is making FFX-2. So far, each new FF has been made from the ground up with different places and characters. They are making FF10 - 2, a sequel to FFX. Featureing all the FFX characters and more. I don't know if it'll be online, but all i know is that FFX-2 is next in development.

The Fantasy is never Final

Strengths: Online RPG, Hours of gameplay, deep job system

Weakness: The hard drive is practically useless, Monthly fee a tad high, not the Final Fantasy game fans were looking for

I have been a Final Fantasy fan since the first one came out and have purchased every stateside iteration of the main series. With that being said, I find myself dissapointed by this game. Its not that FFXI is a bad game, its actually a masterpiece, its that this isn't Final Fantasy in the way you may be looking. Alas, as the saying goes, change is good, and if your an MMORPG fan, then this will prove true. FFXI may be the best MMORPG out there as it offers many different things to do to keep you busy. The job systems are top notch, and the character species and world is very imaginative. Their are server downfalls and other minor problems that MMORPGs have, but if your looking for a console MMORPG to play, then this is the one.

great online rpg

Strengths: very fun, lots of jobs

Weakness: time consuming

I played this game for over half a year and I had a lot of fun. There are several jobs and races and national alligences. I was a White Mage Tarutaru from Windurst. This game is the first online from the FF series. If you are a fan of MMORPGs and Final Fantasy, you will love this game. The only bad thing is the online fees and the time it takes to level. You can only create one character. Each additional character costs a little extra money.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Large community, great graphics and sound, familiar Final Fantasy settings and feel, expansion packs available.

Weakness: An expensive habit to start and maintain, pales in comparison to the better looking PC version, no offline components, new slim PS2 does not support harddrive.

I have mixed feelings about Final Fantasy's first online venture. It's not a traditional Final Fantasy game and is unlike any of the other games in the series. At the same time, it's probably one the best (if not THE best) MMORPG on the market. To me, MMORPG has a long way to go before becoming a mainstream product which is easily accessible to all players. But given the restrictions and undesirable aspects of MMORPGs, FFXI is by far one of the better games to choose from. First off, there is a large community since Square has pooled both PC and PS2 players together. This user base should only expand once this game is released on Xbox 360. Second, the graphics, sound, look, character design, etc., are straight from the world of Final Fantasy. This is great because most MMORPGs are rather bland looking or have generic looking designs. Third, the community is quite friendly overall as most people will help noobs or help you on one of your missions. The problem with the game is that it takes a while to level up and your character will suck a lot in the beginning, especially if you don't have much help. Another flaw is that a lot of the game's objectives forces you join a guild. There is not much solo play after level 10. I guess this is good in the sense that it fosters you to be a part of the greater community but it's also annoying if you don't like it. Like most MMORPGs, the fighting is not action based like on Phantasy Star Online. I recommend you try this game out at a friend's house before buying. There's a one month free trial included when you buy this package but if you don't like the game, then you're stuck with a $100 lump of coal (that can't be played offline). But at least you'll still have the harddrive, which means unlimited space for memory card saves. If you enjoy MMORPGs, you really can't go wrong with Final Fantasy XI.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Almost no load times with hard drive

Weakness: Can only play online, monthly fees to play online

Final Fantasy XI is the first Final Fantasy game in the series to go MMORPG. The game play is very much like Everquest in that it is driven by menus to pick what your character will do & is not action oriented like Phantasy Star Online is. The game play is very deep though it's the kind of game that one who likes it could spend hours, days or maybe even weeks playing over a long enough period of time. You also have the ability to chat with American and Japanese PC and PS2 gamers while online. The game also has a large scope of customization features with 15 different job classes and innumerable skills to be learned. I would suggest gamers that like MMORPGs give Final Fantasy XI a try has it is a better choice for a MMORPG on the PS2 then the port of Everquest to PS2 was but will still be a love, hate kind of thing between liking the game and not liking it.

Final Fantasy XI

Strengths: Very friendly community.

Weakness: Expensive (Monthly Fee) Some mean people out there.

Final Fantasy XI brings a world for all Final Fantasy fans to play in. This is a great things for the Fanbase as you can keep playing this one unlike the others where they had only so much replay value. I used to play Ultima Online but recently switched to this game. It is worth the money you pay for the HDD and for Online support. Basically if you love Final Fantasy and have been looking for a reason to get into an MMORPG, then this game is for you.

Final Fantasy XI

Since its announcement in January of 2000, Final Fantasy XI has probably been one of the PlayStation 2's biggest wild cards -- a title that some questioned would ever see release in North America as plans for a localized hard drive seemed to increase and diminish with regularity. But even if the game were to make it to our shores how would it hold up to consumer anticipation? How would it compare...
