ACH! Zombies!!

Strengths: An amazing world filled with plot twists, interesting characters, and all the zombie-smacking mayhem you can handle in regular or over-the-top anime style (depending how you play)

Weakness: Once complete, the game seems kind of a bother to start again, and early deaths can frustrate players before they get into it. Some bosses are WAY too tough.

If there were ever a video game made from a movie ... Dead Rising is a whole new kind of survival horror. Set in a very realistic mall setting (minus a few features) and crammed with the living dead, Dead Rising is a game for any zombie hunters, fans of the zombie movie genre, or anyone who ever watched a Romero flick and said, "Hey, I'd do this instead!"

The nature of the game is unforgiving at the start. You're little better than the other survivors and until you get experience (by rescues, pictures, and of course, combat), you're very 'squishy.'

Also, the zombies aren't the only danger. There's treachery from humans as well. The less said about that the better (the surprises are better seen for one's self, I think) but suffice to say that when you square off against the living, expect them to take a significant pounding!

There is an interesting system in the game in terms of inventory. All your objects will eventually wear out and at least some food items will spoil. This means that you are constantly replacing things. There are also ways to extend item life at the cost of inventory, through the use of books (some of which will also give other skills). Is it better to have an item that lasts 3x as long, or 2 of the same item?

The game is on a timer which is faster than real-time, and set for essentially a 72-hour limit. There are certain story goals that must be met in that time, and during this time, you'll be getting calls with clues, information, and rescues that people are spotting from the security office.

Abundant save positions combined with specific item areas make the game pleasantly forgiving when you get the hang of it. Unlike Resident Evil, the game will not penalize you for saving your game.

In all, this game is DEFINITELY worth a buy, whether you're a zombie fan, a zombie movie fan, a zombie game fan, an action game fan, or just into customizing your character with a mall's worth of clothes. It's frustrating at the start, but stick with it!

Dead Rising

Strengths: More zombies and ways to kill zombies than you've ever imagined, a great sense of humor

Weakness: Save system, having to answer the phone when zombies are trying to kill you

Dead Rising is simply put, a great game. Just about everything in this game just feels right. The premise is extremely campy: you are trapped in a mall full of zombies and you must survive for 3 days. The right sense of humor is conveyed by the various ways you can dispose of the zombies and with the overall satirical nature of the game. There is just so much to do (and kill) in this game that it is dauntingly fun.

The only problem a lot of people will have is the difficulty. At certain points, this game gets extremely challenging and coupled with the fact that you are constantly racing against the clock and that you can only save in certain spots, this game can cause a few controllers and expletives to fly through your living room. The thing about it though, is that even after I'd die, I'd keep coming back to this game because it was just so fun.

If you don't mind a really challenging game and you enjoy dismembering zombies, why wouldn't you pick this game up?

More fun than a barrel of zombies!

Strengths: Zombies! Lots of Zombies! Lots of weapons to use on Zombies! More Zombies! Did I say there were Zombies!

Weakness: Can seem overly difficult at times. The save mode can be frustrating.

Trying to survive in a shopping mall full of dead zombies? Wheer have I heard that before? No Matter! Dead Rising is a great game. For the sheer fun factor of having hundreds of zombies thrown at you, it's a winner. Use whatever you can as a weapon in a madcap scramble to survive!

That's it in a nutshel. Yeah there's no multiplayer, but there's a ton of zombies. Yeah the save system is lousy but there's a ton of zombies! Yeah your fellow humans you meet in the game are idiots, but there are a ton of zombies!

Zombies!

Zombies in a Mall

Strengths: array of weapons, graphics

Weakness: The timer and the AI of the folks who need to be rescued

Dead Rising is a great game if you love random weapons and killing zombies. It is amazing what one can find in the mall to kill zombies. One of my personal favorites was throwing the CDs, but it did take an awful lot of them to down a zombie. The graphics were amazing. One of the problems I found was the AI of the folks that needed to be rescued. You would think they would run away from the zombies. I paid full price for the game and it was well worth every penny. Plenty of replay value.

Excellent game

Strengths: Good graphics, story line, lots of actions

Weakness: None so far.

Dead Rising is a great action game. It has an excellent story line with loads of actions. In addition, the graphics are awesome. However, you must have an HDTV; otherwise you cannot read the text on the screen. There is lots of violence in it, so it is definitely not for kids (parents be aware).

Great game as long as you are patient

Strengths: Extremely fun game, where you can wander throughout the mall and use whatever you want practically as a weapon.

Weakness: The save system can be frustrating

Such a great game, however the same system can be frustrating if you aren't used to it. Basically you only get one saved game, so spend time leveling up and restart a few times (your character's attributes persist even if you restart).

Lots of fun though!

Interesting twist on the zombie/return from the dead...

Strengths: Good graphics, good gameplay, strong story line

Weakness: Too many cut scenes and loading is a little slow at times

It is an easy game to get immersed in. I spent almost two hours playing, but out of that only maybe about 1/2 of the time is actually playing the rest is watching non-interactive cut scenes. The graphics are great but there should be more control.

If you don't own an XBOX 360 this game will make you...

Strengths: Great graphics, complex gaming world with unlimited play, many useable objects all over the game world.

Weakness: Confusing save system, small text in game in messages due to the developers not testing on regular TV's and only HDTV's.

If you don't own an XBOX 360, this is the game that will make you buy one. Capcom has developed an excellent game where you take the role of a reporter trying to figure out why a town has been infested with zombies. You are placed in a mall with the zombies and have to survive to be picked with hostages that are still human inside. There are so many areas to explore in this game and that makes the gameplay incredibly long.

The save system is a bit buggy as there are missions that you need to solve in order to unlock all of the game. If you save your game and make it impossible to complete one of the side missions in time, you're effectively stuck and have to start the entire game all over.

Also when the game was developed it was tested only on HDTV's. This makes the in game messages that appear on the screen very small if you have a standard definition television. At this time the developers have not offered an official fix for this.

Overall, this is one of the best games for the XBOX 360 and you should own it.... NOW!

Great Game but not for everyone

Strengths: Open ended gameplay, easy pick and play mechanics, impressive number of enemies on screen

Weakness: Graphics look mostly xbox 1 but sharper, can get repetitive, limited online options

I wasn't sure what to expect from this as I found it looking much like state of emergency which was fun but got old after a bit. Luckly sega added story elements to the game to push the player on to play even when they have gotten somewhat bored with the "kill everything moving" and "grab everything not tied town" mechanics. Good game to relieve stress and just play for an hour or so. If you're looking for something deep, move on, you wont find it here and it is a very blantant rip off of Dawn of the dead but thats ok for me as I like the concept. Something alluring about walking around inside a mall and being able to smash up anything you want.

Dead Rising

Strengths: open world gameplay, use anything as your weapon,

Weakness: story, graphics, may be to violent for some

Dead Rising is not a game for the faint at heart. This game is tense and down right bloody. You are a reporter in a town that have been zombified. You get to explore the mall and the town using anything you can find to kill the zombies. At times, there will be hundreds of zombies surrounding you and you will be fighting for your dear life. The gameplay is similar to Dynasty Warriors where there dozens of enemies on the screen but the one huge differences is that you almost everything at your disposal. Anything that you see could be used as a weapon. Overall, a very beat-em, action game.

Relive A George Romero Film In A Game

Strengths: Use just about anything as a weapon that's not tacked onto the floor (pipes, benches, CDs, light sabers, cardboard boxes...you get the idea), great graphics, John Romero-sense of humor

Weakness: You got to walk everywhere!; The entire game is timed so you have to complete certain tasks at the specified deadlines; Only 1 Game Save File!

Dead Rising has just about been THE zombie-killing I've liked the play. The formula is simple, your stuck in a huge shopping mall with zombies-galore. You need to help other survivors (non-zombie humans) while at the same time find out the mystery behind the whole thing. Luckily, you can use just about anything except the kitchen sink in this game as a weapon. Just get near it and grab the item and you've got a new weapon. Some of these weapons are totally outrageous (see human mannequins on aisle 13.) Though it's actually quite hard to find a firearm, I have more fun trying out all the innovative exotic weapon-types (head-slicing CDs anyone?)

Dead Rising (XBOX 360)

Strengths: (1) Nice graphics (2) Instantly accessible game but it offers more complex gameplay as you progress and replay (3) Unique weapon system makes for frantic play, surprises and unexpected laughs!

Weakness: (1) Some will fault the one-slot save system which forces you choose between missions to experience/complete (2) Replaying necessary in order to experience all missions and repertoire of attacks.

Dead Rising will excite and thrill anyone who loves video games and the zombie horror genre. Although the game features a main storyline, which is well done, much of the fun comes from the downtime in between missions (or when you ignore optional missions) and experiment in the open-ended zombie carnage. Due to the premise of the story, you are trapped in a huge mall with tons of zombies out to get you. Obviously, the plot owes everything to Dawn of the Dead but I did not mind the copycat plot very much due to the fact that I was playing a video game. However, as anyone might eventually realize, there are a TON of items in a mall to use to your advantage in your fight against the undead. This is where much of the fun is. There is a lot to do, see and beat down the undead with. You can pick up a seemingly endless variety of weapons and many of them impact your opponents with surprising and humorous effects. There were many time while I was playing where I was constantly thinking, "I wonder what will happen if...". That said, the open-ended gameplay is hampered about a quarter into the game as you are forced to complete mandatory missions for the main storyline. Often, during these quests I was anxious to get them over with so I could have fun exploring and causing chaos on my own terms. In all, I think this is a great game and I will be playing it over and over and would definitely purchase it again.

Dead Rising

I'll be honest with you, I sent my editor a note a while back, practically begging for this title. I love anything zombie, movies, books, Halloween and of course games. If you have read any of my past horror game reviews, you know that I have an obsession with the walking dead. I can't help it, a misspent youth in a house with all the cable channels forged an imagination that embraced the whole...
