Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Complex and challengind combat system. Interesting world. Great RPG. Looks and sounds good for a remake.

Weakness: Slowish pace.

Shining Force is a remake of an older game for the GBA. It transports well to the GBA with upgraded graphics and sounds. It's an RPG which focuses on tactical style combat. There's a lot of complexity and depth to combat and character development. When you're not in battle, you can travel around, meet interesting people, and do some minor quests.

One problem is that combat can be so complex it can take quite a long time to complete a battle. Not really a good thing for a system meant to be portable and on the go. It would be nice if battles were shorter. But that's not how the game was designed and its combat system is it's "shining force."

If you don't like tactical combat RPG's skip it. Otherwise it's a must buy.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: An Improvement on the Genesis Version

Weakness: Seems outdated compared to other SRPG's

Shining Force is basically a remake of the genesis version with updated graphics, new characters and this new card system to improve stats and make the game easier. If you enjoy the genesis version then definitely get this because I had a great time going through memory lane. The gameplay consists of SRPG battles similar to Fire Emblem, you have a team of 12 characters that can attack, defend, use items, or use magic. The other part of the game is spent in a town buying weapons and searching for new party members or cards. After you've beaten the game, there's a harder difficulty to play.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Its portable Shining Force on the go and the game is pretty much intact from the original with a few added extras.

Weakness: Graphics haven't been upgraded that much, gameplay balance issues, and sound isn't as good as the original (due to GBA's little speaker).

Shining Force on the go is a dream come true to most strategy RPG fans. The game uses a turn-based grid system where the enemy moves/attacks with all his characters one turn and then the player gets to do the same. The graphics weren't improved as much as you would expect from a remake, but they get the job done. It was nice reliving old memories of the original Genesis version. Everything from the original is intact, but with a few extras. Like new characters. But its with one of these new characters that the balance in the game is tipped in the players favor. I won't name any names for spoilers sake, but the card character is the man to use if you want to fly through this game cheapo style. If the game didn't have him in it I would recommend this game to everybody. This is a good starter strategy RPG for people new to the genre.

Give the game 5 stars if you were a fan of Shining Force series, 4 stars if you are new to strategy games, and 3 stars if you are a strategy RPG veteran.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Good graphics. Challanging. Good replayablity. Was what I expected.

Weakness: Not multiplayer

This is among the best strategy RPG games for the GameBoy Advance. Obviously not up to what you can get in a multi-player game in a networked PC environment, but a very good substitute when you're on the go

Shining Force

Strengths: Solid, simplistic battle system, fast paced and interesting storyline

Weakness: Slow paced battles

Shining Force is a remake of the Sega Genesis original.

I can't remember my first play through of Shining Force at all so this might as well have been a new game to me. I liked how the story moved at a fast pace and remained interesting with it's cast of characters, but the battles were a little too slow paced for me. In many battles, you'll waste turns just trying to meet the enemy in battle but since Shining Force doesn't have a battle system that forces you to use the terrain to your advantage (for the most part), it feels like wasted turns.

Still, it is a game that fairly easy game to get into and later battles can get tough. The game's menus are easy to navigate despite there being plenty of them and it will be hard to experience much downtime during your adventure due to the game's linear nature. If your turned off by the ultra stat micro management of Tactics Ogre, hunt down a copy of Shining Force.

a return of a classic

Strengths: play SF on the go

Weakness: not as good as the original

This game is a remake of the classic genesis game. It is one of the first stargey game, in which you are trying to defeat your enemies on a map. Each character has a class, and they have their strenght and weakness. The only bad thing is that while the graphics are better than the original, the sound is not as good.

Shining Force

Strengths: Great strategy/tactics game, remake of Genesis classic, storyline

Weakness: Graphics and sound look a little outdated

Shining Force is a remake of the Sega Genesis classic. It is a game similar to Final Fantasy tactics, in which, you control a group of members on your team and attempt to accomplish a set goal (i.e., defeat all the enemies on-screen, defeat the leader of the team, get to a certain spot on the map, etc.). The game play is fantastic and there are many different ways and strategies when approaching a battle. Some units are weaker/stronger against others and some units are weaker/stronger towards certain spells. Some extra characters and a card collecting game have also been added to the GBA version.

The drawbacks of the game are that unfortunately, the graphics and sound are still the same as the Genesis. The developers did not upgrade these and it does detract from the game. However, the tactics/strategy system is one of the best that I have played and I would strongly recommend this title to a strategy game fan.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: GREAT GAME...Gameplay GREAT

Weakness: NONE

This game was fantastic! I was so surprised at how great it actually was. I played it all the way to the end, then replayed it again using different characters as my main. Awesome storyline, awesome gameplay, awesome battles. Everyone should try this one. Pay full price.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Terrific gameplay, interesting characters and classes.

Weakness: Graphics and sound.

I've become a huge strategy fan in the last few years, primarily due to Intelligent Systems and their Advance Wars and Fire Emblem games. I picked this up at a great price, and must admit that I was turned off at first by the weird battle music, ugly character portraits, and a battle where I spent more time walking toward the enemies instead of actually fighting them.

But I pledged to give it a chance, and I'm glad that I did. I was won over by the simplicity of the gameplay and battle system and the variety of characters and classes. The simplicity of the system is great, too, and the replay option is a definite plus. The plot's good, too, though it's full of cliches. Of course, back when the game was released in the early '90's, the cliches weren't cliches.

Highly recommended.

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Simple yet fun, easy to understand menus & catchy music

Weakness: May not appeal to gamers who don't have the patience for older slow paced games

Remake of the classic game for the Sega Genesis. Great SRPG game the 1st one I've ever played. The thing that has always made Shining Force great to me is that it is really easy to learn & understand yet it's is just as fun if not more then a more complex SRPG such as Final Fantasy Tactics

Shining Force: Resurrection Of The Dark Dragon

Strengths: Style, presentation, gameplay, controls.

Weakness: Graphics and sound are outdated.

Despite this being a remake of an older game, since this is a remake of the first Shining game, the game is not going to look pretty. With that said, you just have to look past the rough exterior to discover one of gaming's greatest gems. Topnotch and fun gameplay will be found. This series has had numerous sequels and continued success for a reason, and this is the one that started it all. Any strategy-RPG fan owes it to themself to pick this one up and discover a classic, find out how this genre began.

Shining Force ResurrectionDark Dragon

Shining Force comes from a different time. This is a time where RPGs featured clichéd stories and endless leveling up. It was noteworthy in its time for blazing a new trail -- a trail that recent titles have taken several steps further, for the good of the genre. A little history lesson is good every now and then, and Atlus polished this game up and presents it to tactical fans who may not have...
