Strengths: Good graphics and sound, well-done Western atmosphere, good action, nice character variety, decent storyline

Western third-person shooter action is done well in Red Dead Revolver.

Good graphics and sound, coupled with nice visual effects make for a beliveable Western atmosphere in this third person shooter, which tries to do a Western revenge film and pulls it off well enough. The slow-motion shooting of "Dead Eye" mode is an amusing touch. The story line is good, doing flashbacks at different times through different characters, and it helps to advance the story along well enough. It's better than most storylines added to games, and it keeps interest throughout.

The main mode is the single player, though there is a split-screen multiplayer. Split screen doesn't do well in this title, which would have been better done through either LAN play, XBox Live play, or both. It's usable for two players, with more, it's too small on screen. Overall, it seems a bit tacked on as an afterthought.

Good action, good graphics and sound and a decent storyline add up enough to make it worth looking into for an action fan, though multiplayer fans will probably want to look elsewhere. There's enough unlockable aspects for some good replay value, thought the single person story is the real strength.

Red Dead Revolver

Strengths: Excellent western atmosphere, interesting characters, good gameplay

Weakness: The game is on the short side, unnecessary stealth and escort missions interrupt the pacing

Red Dead Revolver is an excellent third-person shooter set in the old west. The story is right out of any familiar western: the main character's parents are killed and he spends the rest of the game on a one man killing spree to exact his revenge. The atmosphere is gritty and both the visuals and the "old-timey" music fit perfectly. The graphics are nicely done although nothing is overly detailed. Most of the levels are somewhat small, but they serve perfectly for the fast pace gameplay.

The game plays like most third-person shooters, but you get bounty points depending on where you shoot the enemies. Sure, you could just shoot enemies in the head and be done with them, but to really rack up the points, you should first shoot them in the legs or arms a couple of times and then go for the headshot. You can continue linking these combos to additional enemies to really rack up the bounty money. This money is used to unlock new weapons, upgrade weapons, unlock characters in multiplayer, and unlock entries in a journal that chronicles your exploits.

The enemies are smart enough to hide behind objects and then jump out and fire a few shots at you. Fortunately, you are able to do this as well, and although the enemies do try and hide behind stuff, in the end they are still the same bumbling idiots that are in any western. As you rack up the kills, you build up your "Dead Eye" meter. This meter allows you to slow time and lock on several shots, then fire them all at once. It's a neat feature, but I only used it when the fights were really intense.

There are some other nice elements thrown into the gameplay as well. There are levels where you will ride horses, trains, and carriages. There are several secondary players that you will both get to play as and play alongside. There are also several quick draw showdowns that I wish were implemented a little differently. I never felt like I was fully in control during these showdowns and it took some of the satisfaction out of situation that could have really been enjoyable.

I really think they did an excellent job on this game but there were some short stealth areas and escort type missions that I thought broke up the action of the game. There's quite a bit of stuff to unlock and various objectives after you go through the game once (it only takes about six hours to beat). There's also splitscreen multiplayer.

Overall, a very nice game that is just short of a 5 out of 5.

Action Packed Western

Strengths: tons of action, cool concept, "Showdown" battles are unique, good bosses

Weakness: very short, alternate characters all play the same way, unlockables are lame

Red Dead Revolver is a classic western movie come to life. You play as Red, a bounty hunter that is out for revenge after someone...well I won't spoil the surprise here (even though you'll know after playing for 5 minutes or if you've ever seen a western before). The story keeps you interested but really is nothing special. But story isn't really what this game is about. It's about action, and lots of it.

Aiming and firing is a blast and is pretty accurate given the speed and rate things move. Rockstar would be wise to lift this system and use it in their flagship GTA series. There are plenty of pistols, rifles and throwing weapons to choose from and upgrade which lends itself to different styles of play. You can hang back and pick people off with a rifle for a while, then go in with twin pistols blazin' for some up close action. A couple twists offered in the game are Red's special Max Payne like bullet time where you can target specific limbs in slo-mo then unload at full speed, and the Showdown battles. These Showdowns are like a quickdraw contest between you and an enemy (or 3) where you've got to draw before him, then connect with enough shots in slo-mo to kill him before he can kill you. Simple, but pretty fun.

The sound and music done well and gives an authentic western feel to the game. Graphics are fine, nothing special, but the characters look a bit blocky upclose. Not a huge drawback but if you've played Stranger's Wrath (a similarly themed western shooter) you'll know what kind of beautiful characters this system is capable of.

Red's main drawback is the length of the game. If I recall there are around 35 chapters, but if you sit down for an hour you'll blow through 6 or 7 of them at a time. I was able to finish most of the game over a weekend. Another disadvantage are the unlockables. There's really no incentive to spend your outlaw killin' money on journal pages that provide background info on characters and locations. Especially since these bios (of pretty generic characters I might add) are only available from the main menu and don't really add anything to the game or story.

Aside from a few quirks RDR is quite a lot of fun to play despite its short length. Consider it for a rental or pick it up if you can find it pretty cheap (which you can these days). A lengthened RDR2 with some polished graphics could really be a great project...we can only hope!

One of the few good Western games

Strengths: One of the few good Western games on the market, Music is top-notch and good storyline.

Weakness: Game is short, could use more variety.

If you're a fan of the Spaghetti Westerns, then you'll probably love Red Dead Revolver, despite its' flaws. The presentation in terms of graphics and sound are excellent and the storyline is quite interesting. The gun-fighting is a lot of fun and there are a lot of variety in missions and side quests. Those expecting this to be a GTA game in a western setting will be somewhat disappointed because this game doesn't quite give you the freedom or variety as the GTA series. I would recommend this game to any action fans as well as western fans.

Rockstar Studios tries placing Max Payne's gameplay...

Strengths: Intense gunfighting action, solid Western soundtrack, cinema-style graphics filters and camera angles, Xbox-exclusive multi-player mode

Weakness: Minimal storyline, short overall length, lack of graphical detail

Given the relative success of its Max Payne series, it was only a matter of time before Rockstar tried putting its tried and true third person shooter gameplay into another setting. Here, the developer pays tribute to the many Spaghetti Westerns of years gone by.

The best part of Red Dead Revolver is its intense gunfighting action. As a lone bounty hunter, you'll tackle a series of all-too-brief missions where you'll basically blow holes in just about everything you see, and it's good fun for as long as it lasts.

Unfortunately, the missions are relatively short (a few minutes each), and the entire game can be completed over a weekend rental. However, the budget $20 price tag makes it somewhat consumer-friendly. If you enjoy third person shooters, you could do a lot worse.

Not many good Western-themed games have appeared on console systems. Rockstar changed all that in 2004 with Red Dead Revolver, a game it revitalized after Capcom, the former publisher, left it for dead. The question is, though, does Rockstar's first foray into the Western frontier deliver the same kind of punch as its gritty crime titles? It sure does, pardner.

Contrary to what one might expect from Rockstar, however, Red Dead Revolver does not deliver a gameplay experience in the vein of Grand Theft Auto. You cannot leisurely roam about the game world and undertake missions as you see fit, nor can you "horse-jack" random townspeople. And you certainly cannot spend any quality time with a wench to earn a health boost. Grand Theft Auto: Old Tucson this ain't!

Rather, Red Dead Revolver plays out like a traditional third-person action game, offering an exciting romp through dusty territories filled with all sorts of no-good, rotten varmints. Think of it as Max Payne with cowboy boots, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Need further convincing? There's a bullet-time-esque feature that slows down time.

The game puts you in the boots of multiple characters and places you in a variety of heated situations, with Rockstar's trademark humor and bloodshed instilled into the action. Deliberately grainy visuals and authentic sounds (including music by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone) help sell the presentation, while frenzied gameplay and tight controls keep itchy trigger fingers satisfied.

Even though Red Dead Revolver has a blend of good, bad, and ugly characteristics, it ultimately warrants a fistful of dollars from twitch gamers — and perhaps a few dollars more from those who appreciate Spaghetti Westerns. Bonus points to those who recognized the Sergio Leone film references in the last sentence.

Red Dead Revolver is a third person action/shooter game that takes place in the wild west. It has some pretty cutscenes and visuals. There are lots of different weapons, characters and levels that are unlockable. Theres a multiplayer component as well.

Mediocre.

This game ties in a combination of things, such as horse back riding next to a train, to draws. The story is the typical parents-get-killed-kid-turns-into-badass-bounty hunter. The character developement is non-existant.

Draw!

Strengths: Aesome character design, gameplay, graphics, and sound.

Weakness: Incredibly annoying loading noise during gameplay.

Red Dead Revolver is a great 3rd person action adventure game set in the Old West. The controls graphics and sound are all great. The game is just simply fun to play. The problem with the game comes in the form of the contant loading that goes on in-game. It is very noisey and distracting. Anybody who played Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast will know want I'm talking about. If you can put up with a noisey disc you have agreat game on your hands.

This game was pretty fun for a while, then it got WAY too hard. I enjoyed it though, I'd say you can safely pick this one up and get your moneys worth out of it. It's entertaining until ridiculously difficult.

Rockstar Games RED DEAD REVOLVER for Xbox is an entertaining and fun action game with a western feel. The game is pretty straight forward in your objectives which are to blow away your competition. I wish the game had Xbox Live capabilities as that would add more replayability to the game, but as it stands, the game can be found for less than $20 now, so its definitely as solid pick up for this fun western styled action game

Spaghetti Western on the small screen

Strengths: Game design,

Weakness: Minor technical problems, voice acting, no Xbox Live.

The reason I give this game 5 stars instead of 4 is because it succeeds in what it is trying to be -- a Spaghetti Western shooter-bonanza. Although there are some Hollywood Western elements, it is mostly very Spaghetti Western, with some of the more offbeat themes and some strange quirky and supernatural elements.

A lot of people who see the "Rockstar" logo on the front will think this is Grand Theft Horse & Carriage... well, it's not. It's pretty much straight-forward and linear -- but tastefully. It reminds me of the games of old, with tones of shootin' and runnin'.

There's enough variation in gameplay to keep it fresh from chapter to chapter.

There's also a multiplayer mode which is extremely fun. Too bad this game doesn't support Xbox Live... but you can play friends if you have extra controllers or a system link cable. Also, there are bots if you don't have any friends to play with.

Amazing game. The only major downfall is the length of the story mode. It's long, but I wish it were longer.
