Even a strategy game needs a story

Strengths: none

Weakness: -slow pacing, no story, battles and some strategy parts are tedious

With Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires Koei has taken out the fun in the series.

The main problem I had with the game is that there's no story! And without a story the characters lacked personality or development. I'm use to the larger than life caricatures of real life Chinese warriors from the other Dynasty Warrior games so I was disappointed by Empires. There are no cutscenes and very little conversation between generals and such.

So what you end up with is controlling lifeless, empty shells of chinese characters in an average strategy game. While the strategy parts give you something else to do outside of battles, they aren't all that fun and some even slow down the pace of the game. For example: you can spend money to build up the technology and have your blacksmith create items. Sounds kind of cool but then if you use it, it disappears at the end of the battle. That means you'll have to have the blacksmith create the item again which wastes a turn.

I'm sticking with the core Dynasty Warriors series from now on.

Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires

Back in the 90s, I used to dream of games that merged the fighting genre with any other existing gameplay style. In particular I wanted an RPG with a fighting game engine. Long, arduous battles could then be replaced by 2-minute bouts. I felt the same way about adventure games. Whereas a punch here and a kick there could go a long way in most titles, I wanted a game that made hand-to-hand combat...

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires

As though Dynasty Warriors 5 wasn't enough to satisfy the hunger of fans, Koei brings yet another addition to that game: Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires. The object of the game is to build an enormous empire in China via force or diplomacy.
