R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Blistering 2.5 D old school shooting action, it's R-TYPE!!

Weakness: Prepare to die...a LOT. No 2 player Co-op.

The old 2D shooters have all but faded from the books, being something that old timers (that's people over 21) can sit around and discuss ("Remember when you're little dot graphics had to move around avoiding smaller dots and you could only take one dot's worth of damage? That was TRUE video gaming skill!!" -- Old Timer after getting beat for the umpteenth time at Halo 2 online). But here it is, a great 2.5D shooter that does the series justice and perhaps will close the chapter on this wonderful genre of video game.

Basically, R-Type Final has you piloting one of several ships as you fly from left to right (or sometimes from right to left or up and down) shooting enemy ships and avoid their multitudes of bullets and missiles. Twitch gameplay at its finest. I call it 2.5D as you play in 2 dimensions, but the screen fakes 3D by rotating around certain objects while you're flying and between sequences. Bosses are huge, graphics are sharp and accurate, and basically, you're thumb is going to hurt when you're done. It's very similar to older R-Type games, as you get power ups that change your weapon type (and sometimes adds guns around or behind you) and you can hold the shot button for a powered up shot.

The level design is beautiful, and you'll find yourself dying several times gaping at the stunning backgrounds as well as trying to dodge an almost impossible wall of artillery. Don't fret, there are SOME continues at your disposal, but don't waste them. You'll need every single ship to survive this precarious fast action shooter.

If you like the shooters of old, such as Gradius, Lifeforce, Defender or even Scramble (and if you remember that you should definitely pick this up), this game is for you. Although only one player, it's great fun and easy to pick up and play. Otherwise, if you don't like 2D shooters, or don't recognize any of the games I mentioned, skip it and go back to playing Halo 2. You know who you are. ;)

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Over 100 ships to choose from!

Weakness: No auto-save feature.

This Final game is definitely a step up from the first time I played the game in the 80's. The additional ships and weapons make this game a step above the previous versions. The high resolution levels and detailed 3D characters make for exiciting gameplay. The two player mode is a great additon to the game, enabling the use of a customized fighter. Overall the game is well worth the time.

R-Type Final

Strengths: Basic 2-D shooter design is done well, level environments are interesting. Tons of unlockable ships.

Weakness: Music and sound are average at best

R-Type Final is a good redesign of a classic franchise. The game manages to find a balance between old and new and is easy to pick up and play. However, the levels soon increase in difficulty, making the game a challenge for fans and new players. The large amount of unlockable ships adds to the replay value, even though some of the ships are very similar and differ in only a few minor areas. R-Type Final is a perfect choice for anyone looking for fast-paced 2D action.

R-type - it's an old school classic

Strengths: Great 2-d/3-d shoot em up Graphics update to this great series

Weakness: All the switching around of background(flipping upside down in first level , for example) can make you a bit queasy

I was thrilled when this game came out. I LOVE the sega master system version of this game. Can't get enough of it.
This game builds on the existing strengths of the series. You can unlock over 100 different ships here, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. They have expanded on weapons as well, since these ships can have their unique weapon types.

It is a hard game too - don't expect to beat it right away.
Fans of the old sega master system version will remember the battle with the super duper spaceship in the early levels. That was great!

I definitely recommend this game. 5 stars!

R-type Final

Strengths: Classic shooter action, graphics, sound, numerous extras, challenging

Weakness: Can get extremely difficult and frustrating in spots, slowdown in some spots

R-type Final is one of the better entries in a dying breed of video games, the shooter. The action is tremendous and high paced as you navigate your spaceship through dangerous areas and screens filling up with ammunition. The graphics and sound are both above average. And, as most shooters are, the game is very challenging. Most boss encounters involve figuring out a pattern that the enemy will attack and then exposing his weakness. Some of these battles may have to be fought multiple times as you figure out the enemy’s pattern and weak points.

The only drawback I found in this game is sometimes it can get extremely difficult or cheap at times. It is often frustrating to get so far into a stage and then die because of in-game slowdown or being hit by a stray bullet after dodging the first fifteen or so. But overall, this is just me complaining. It is definitely a challenging experience, but well worth the effort.

R-Type, the legendary spaceship shooter

Strengths: amazing graphics

Weakness: extremely hard

R-Type, the legendary spaceship shooter, has come blasting back with her classic horizontally scrolling blueprint intact. Through waves of alien miscreants, you'll fight for each gained inch of space battlefield while collecting power-up items to enhance your ship's most primary weapon, the Mighty Orb Of Death. With R-Type's trademarked invincible sphere docked to the front or rear of the ship, MOOD can unleash deadly firestorms upon foes or be hurled forward to attack remotely and smash through most anything it comes in contact with. Though the gameplay is classic, the graphics have been updated to polygons (thereby qualifying for a Sony of America license) with lots of glowing lighting effects flowing gracefully over them. Most enemies are basic spaceships, but some levels have well-animated living creatures, like the badass water-worm things that slither though level 2. Sadly, even with crazy alien monsters, uber-weapons, 100+ ships and giant bosses, R-Type is a rather unexciting shooter. The MOOD is a shield against nearly all projectiles; so most levels are spent calmly avoiding being pinched between narrow passages and otherwise harmless enemy trains. Not a befitting task for "humankind's last hope."

R-Type Final for PS2

Strengths: Old school shooter action.

Weakness: Default difficulty maybe too high for casual players.

R-Type Final is a classic shoot 'em up full of fast paced 2D action. The gameplay demands quick reflexes and memorizing the different patterns of the flood of enemies to succeed. While the game is hard, there is the ability to adjust the difficulty setting. And the challenge will keep you coming back to improve and dominate. There's plenty here to master with over 100 ships to unlock and customize.

Intuitive controls allow you to easily control the speed and weapon modifiers of your ship. Both of which add another layer to the shooting and evading.

Although it is a 2D side scroller the presentation is slick with detailed, 3d models and beautiful graphics.

Overall, a must buy for old school shooter fans.

R-Type Final

Strengths: good graphics, vertical side scroler

Weakness: can be difficult, no cooperative play

This is a decent side scroller shooter in which you can customize and unlock about 100 ships. There's lots of enemies coming at you. There are several different game modes and difficulty settings you can choose from/

The NEW oldies shooter game

Strengths: +Fun, +Decent Graphics, +Gameplay

Weakness: -1 player

R-Type Final is basically a newer and (I assume) Final version of the older 2-d, shooter R-type game. The older gamers will love this game as will some younger gamers. Gameplay is awesome. It's a game that everyone will enjoy. Great game for the whole family to get into. One major set back is the fact that it is a 1 player game =(. Other than that this game is great. A must buy at the < $10 price point.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: + nice graphics + lots of action + ~100 ships to unlock

Weakness: - very hard - unlockables are based on the amount of time you put into the game - level designs aren't very inspiring

R-Type Final is a side scrolling/ 2D shooter, continuing the 16-bit R-Type series, and as such it can be an extremely hard, unforgiving game. While it has many unlockables and rewards players for playing the game, the levels aren't inspiring enough to make you want to play the game over.

The graphics for the game are beautiful to look at. Everything, from the backgrounds of the levels to the actual ships and enemies, is highly detailed and I definitely found myself having to replay levels because I was staring at the backgrounds instead of paying attention to the action on screen.

Like all 2d shooters, R-Type is filled with action. Often the screen will be filled with explosions, bullets, missiles, and other projectiles. It's satisfying when you're in that zone and you're dodging everything. But one mistake and it'll cost you because in this game one shot will destroy your ship/take up a life. So if you're not fond of twitch action gameplay or memorizing the layout of levels, then this game is definitely not for you.

There are lots of ships to unlock which encourages you to replay the game, but after a while the game just becomes boring. I've had this game for over 6 months but I rarely take it out to play. The levels are great to look at but aren't inspiring. There's nothing that stands out and makes me want to play it over and over. Another gripe that I have is that this game isn't 2 player. There's a vs. mode but it's against a single ship controlled by computer AI.

My suggestion: Try one of the Gradius games. Same type of action, not as great to look at, but it has a 2 player mode which will make all the difference.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Awesome Classic Shooter, Great Graphics, Huge number of ships

Weakness: May be a bit hard for some

I can't really say anything bad about Rtype Final, its almost my favorite classic style shooter. Theres tons to do here and very addictive. You'll be playing over and over again to try all the different ships and weapon combos since you're almost constantly unlocking more. The biggest thing against it is that it may be too hard for some of the younger or less experienced players. By the end levels, you'll almost have to play perfectly to be able to complete it. Other than that, I think most people will be able to enjoy R-Type.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Good graphics for a 2d-style shooter. Tons of unlockable ships. Good selection of difficulty modes.

Weakness: Very unforgiving, saving is hard to do. Bad music.

The R-type game is a classic shooter and deserves this update. a 2d-style game in 3d is as good as it going to get for this kind of game. There is lots of options and strategy that is needed. There is lots of slow-down when there are tons of objects on-screen that really ruins the effect sometimes. The music is bad, shooter music can be very addictive, but not this stuff. Best of the R-type games? Maybe not, but the most impressive graphics-wise for sure!

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Great action, graphics, 100 ships to choose from, fun unlockables

Weakness: Some slowdown and uninspired sounds and music.

R-Type was probably my favorite shoot 'em up series - at least of those where you were a spaceship. I picked this up hoping for a blast from the past and certainly got it. It provides the classic shooter action with updated graphics. It seems a bit easier than the original, as I remember it. Particularly, because there don't seem to be as many narrow passages to navigate. Still, it took me right back, and I especially loved the speed up/slow down feature and included auto-fire. Playthrough time and challenge depends both on the level you set it at and how you use continues. Some of the enemy and boss design is really well done, and you seem to have great freedom in navigating the levels, though the level design itself isn't too inspiring. The graphics are really top notch. Great 3D models for your ships and enemies, and wonderful effects both in foreground and background. The sounds are functional, though not spectacular. They don't seem much updated from the original arcade game, and none of the music was particularly memorable. All-in-all, this is a solid shooter. If you like those, and especially if you like R-Type, you owe it to yourself to pick it up - it can be had for under $20!

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: loads of unlockables

Weakness: difficult to play

this game is a quick throwback to the good ol' shooter days of the 80's. The game has quick gameplay, loads upon loads of unlockables, many different ships, and a wide use of continues. The game is very difficult though to those that have never played a shooter before. The controls are fluid, graphics are nice. The game is worth every penny in my humble opinion.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: More than 100 ships, different paths to play though

Weakness: some slowdown

R-Type Final is a 2D shoot'em up game & while it doesn't really do anything drastically different then others of it's type it is a solid game. One cool thing about the game is that it offers different paths to play though depending on which ship you are using or by destroying things which will help as to freshen up the game while playing though it multiple times. R-Type Final isn't as hard as some other Shooters but that ain't a bad thing as it will still present a harder challenge on the harder difficulties it just ain't as brutal on the easier settings. Overall I'd say that R-Type Final while it doesn't add anything new to the genre it does offer a vast assortment of stuff that will make any shoot'em up fan happy so I would highly recommend the game to anyone that is a fan of shoot'em ups.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: A quality shooter and a great way for the final r-type.

Weakness: Too Slow and not much of a challenge after you remember patterns.

R-type has been a great series since it first appeared on the arcade and into our 8bit systems. This game allows the user to choose over fifty ships (must first unlock them) and use each ships differents strenghts to pass a stage. The r-type series has had great level designs and this game is no exception. The sound it mediocre and uses some old school sounds. The replay value is high because you must keep playing and that would allow the user to unlock secrets(ships). Overall a good game but very simple.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Excellent graphics and sound for PS2.

Weakness: Could be easier to start a game and save data.

Classic shooter game with over 100 ships to earn and choose, including a ton of weapons and power ups! Graphics and sound are excellent, perhaps not cutting edge, but if you like shooters, this is the game to buy! Loads of levels, enemies and of course, titanic bosses. I have yet to play another shooter game as good as this one.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: The graphic is so good

Weakness: not two player game

If you love heavy 3d graphic for shooter game. This is defintely the one to buy. The only bad part about this games is the fact that it is a one player.

R-TYPE Final

Strengths: Great graphics, frantic action, lots of variety of ships, great gameplay, lots of unlockables

Weakness: Some graphic slowdown, sounds are only so-so

The R-Type series comes to an end with R-Type Final.

The graphics in the game are extremely well done, showing great design elements and all of it is well detailed. One small issue is that there's some graphical slowdown from time to time. The sounds are only passable, with nothing really standing out.

The action is the real draw to the game, with lots of fast and furious shooting to be had, with over 100 ships to pick from through the course of the game. A good number of the ships need to be unlocked through the course of the game, which adds in some replay value to it. Plenty of things to shoot and dodge.

Old-school shooter fans will pick this game up without question, and action gamers should also look hard at this game.
