Sonic Riders
Strengths: Plays to Sonic's strengths as a racing game
Weakness: Sonic is on a hoverboard
Sonic Riders is a Sonic-on-a-hoverboard racing game. While the idea of a Sonic racing game is a good one (as the Sega mascot is well known for his speed), this game doesn't quite hit the mark. The hoverboard/trick system is a pale imitation of the SSX snowboarding franchise. The graphics are nice, the racing is smooth, and the course selection is varied. However, the racing never achieves the blazing sense of speed you would expect from a Sonic racing game. In this, it is hampered by the hoverboard and trick aspect, as well as some gimmicks like turbulence-riding (which, although a new twist on the racing genre, does not entirely succeed). If you are a big fan of the Sonic characters (as many are available to play here) and want an enjoyable but not very deep multiplayer racing experience, pick this game up on the cheap.
