Puzzle Game - PlayStation 2 - MPN: 711719710523

A decent puzzle game.

Strengths: If you like puzzle games, you'll probably get a few fours out of it.

Weakness: Lacks the addictive qualities of great puzzles.

This was the only game Sony put out when they launched their PS2, and for a game so early, it sure is pretty. If you're a fan of fireworks or puzzle games, you'll have some fun with it, but the problem is, once you're done, you're done. There's really nothing to unlock or any reason to try to improve your score.

puzzle type game

Strengths: some will be entertained

Weakness: others will not

I wasn't too thrilled about this game. Its a puzzle type game in which you shoot fire works. The concept and gameplay really didn't entice me. In my opinion this game was a waste of time.

FantaVision

Strengths: Nice stlye, unique idea for a puzzler

Weakness: I find myself with more success mashing buttons than using puzzling strategy

This game caught my eye in the discount bin. "Oh!" I thought, "A music game?" Not quite. The Box tells me its a Firework Puzzle Game! With music! Well, that sounds like something to try for such a cheap price! From a wordy in game tutorial, I learned the basics of the game. In this game you make fireworks go off by jumping the cursor from flare to flare. Link colors of flares and make sure you set them all off. You can even set off flares by catching them in other explosions. Uh... at least I think those were the rules. Anyway, I tried it and while pretty, it was hard getting through the level. I had more success mashing the button franticly. I give this game credit for trying something new and giving me a nice firework show. However, it was too frantic a puzzler for my liking. I still think it was worth its price though.

FantaVision

Strengths: Very Different

Weakness: Not much to it

This game is actually kinda cool, but very basic. There isn't very much to it but it's very different. You kind of play with fireworks and try to beat the other team. I didn't like it all that much, but I can see why others would. Rent it before you buy it.

FantaVision

Strengths: Pretty graphics, easy to learn, intuitive control.

Weakness: Just not addictive.

A puzzle/action game with fireworks and cool graphics. Too bad it's not as compelling as it sounds.

"Fantavision" was a launch title for the PS2. Unlike some launch titles, it doesn't feel rushed or incomplete. "Fantavision" seems to be a well-thought out package, with good design and high production values.

The point of the game is to detonate fireworks that are launched. String together combos of like-colored fireworks, and you do really well. You don't have control over which fireworks are launched, so it's a bit of a guessing game and a real-time evaluation of what to do with what you've got. Special fireworks let you string together combos with different colors, but you have to think about it or you'll end up with a bunch of fireworks that get lost, a measly combo, and a premature end to the stage.

Oddly, for a game that features fireworks, it just doesn't have that 'spark' that the best, most addictive, most playable games have. Every time I take out "Fantavision" I wonder why I haven't played it. And then I play it for a little while, and it's cool. And then I put it away and forget about it.

And that basically says it all. It's not bad. It is fun and pretty. But it's not compelling. It doesn't draw you back for more. You won't be up all night playing it.

Given that you can get "Fantavision" dirt cheap these days, there's no reason not to give it a try. It's fun and it's pretty and you'll get some enjoyment out of it. It's also very different from just about everything else, so people who like obscure or weird games should check it out.

I'll note that I still have "Fantavision". I don't play it often. But I keep it around, for every now and then. If you don't expect too much, you just might like it.

FantaVision

Strengths: Nice graphics, fun puzzle challenges, easy to get into

Weakness: A bit repetitive

Fantavision is a simple puzzle game, where launching fireworks into the sky to make explosions and combination explosions, scoring points. It's sort of like Tetris in a number of ways, though set up in a reverse pattern, going upwards. The fireworks and explosions look nice, and it's an easy game to get into, though it can get a bit repetitive at times.

Puzzle fans should look at getting this game.

FantaVision

Strengths: PS2's first puzzle game, pretty graphics, fireworks without the missing fingers, now inexpensive to purchase

Weakness: Game play gets old quickly

Back in the Fall of 2000, Sony Computer Entertainment America struggled to get all of its gaming genre bases covered for the launch of its new Playstation 2 hardware. Unfortunately, the only software support that Sony itself put out for the PS2's North American release was Fantavision, a relatively lackluster puzzle game. Marketed as a "fast and furious puzzle game taken to new heights," Fantavision was supposed to combine action, shooting, strategy and puzzle solving all in one neat and tidy package.

Players shoot flares, fireworks, etc. into various sky and space-based environments to create explosive chain reactions and then replay said explosions using different camera angles and weather effects. Unfortunately, the game itself just wasn't much fun for very long. Of course, this didn't stop legions of PSone owners from making the PS2 launch a roaring success, but given that the PS2's first triple-A games (Devil May Cry, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, etc.) didn't start to arrive for nearly another year, I feel really sorry for people that actually put down $50 to purchase Fantavision at launch.
