Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This was a good adaptaion of the book.  There were minor changes to the storyline and things were omitted but that is to be expected when the make any book into a movie.  They have good casting especially with Harry, Ron, and Hermoine.  I really enjoy the Quidditch scene in the movie as well.

Eh, these movies are okay. Pretty annoying but okay. The story in this one is decent enough. I still thing "Lord of the Rings" is about a zillian zillian times better.

As a Potter fan, I was disappointed. The acting was pretty bad and the whole story line just didn't fire you up like the book did. The book's good, though, so I'm giving it another star.

I have read all the books and seen all the movies and I have my pro's and con's about it. I can see the witchcraft aspect of it but I can also see the bravery/heroic side of it. It goes both ways.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

You have to enjoy well-done films, and this was a good one; just enough exposition for those who hadn't read the book, solid casting throughout, and a nice pace that caused neither snores nor nosebleeds. The monster animation left a little to be desired, but the other special effects were nailed with a fair degree of ingenuity. Should be plenty watchable over the next couple of decades.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Despite GoneAway and Gentle Jude's dismissal (without even having read the books or seen the movie, but based on a rumour that they promote withcraft and satanism and things like that (which we all know is not true. Most of us were already into that stuff before the books came out!))of all things Potter, the movie is fantastic. It stays to the book as much as possible, and is a nice visual introduction to the world of Harry Potter. The casting was damn near perfect, and you can really believe that Daniel, Rupert, and Emma ARE really Harry, Ron, and Hermione. THe Quidditch scene is visually breathtaking. Great special effects throughout make for one great movie. IJR says don't listen to GoneAway, and check this one out for yourself if you want a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This movie was okay but way too long. It felt like 6 hours. The book was exactly like the book. And I think that is where the problem was for many people. If we want to know how the book is we would read it. I wanted to see a shorter, compact version of the book. It felt streched. Still a good movie, but more for the younger audiences.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I have read the book and have see the movie. Both were great. I was pleased to see that they followed the book so closely. To anyone who will not watch or read Harry Potter because they think witchcraft is evil, my grandfather, a devoted southern baptist preacher, has read all the books and seen all the movie so far produced and loves them and finds the stories to be a wonderful creation of fantasy. So to those nah-sayer, what's next, boycott Wizard of Oz and at least half the Disney movies ever created, burn David Copperfield alive. It's a story, and a good one at that!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I do not like this movie because it condones witchcraft and black magic, which is clearly evil and something we are to stay away from. When we are dealing with witchcraft, we are dealing with demonic powers, because we don't have magical powers. There is no such thing as using magic for good. Maybe the person may be using it for good in their mind, but that power is from the devil. He is mucking around with their mind and fooling them into believing that they are using his power for good. There are lots of Bible verses that speak against witchcraft, magical arts, astrology, psychics, fortune tellers etc. Some people may think that white magic is good, but whether it is black or white, it is still evil and God hates it. Black magic is using physical magic eg spells and doing a lot of the stuff on Harry Potter and Charmed. White magic is dealing with psychic powers, manipulating people's emotions and will, fortune telling, astrology etc. Using Satan's power is like throwing your steak dinner to lions. They will rip the steak up and eat it, turn around and rip you to pieces. Satan is a horrible, unfair bank dealer. Most banks charge interest, but the devil lends you money, but charges 200% interest.

fantastic visual interrpretation of the first novel in the Potter series. a little long in the tooth b/c of Colombus' wanting to appease the book fans. still good stuff. although after reading the Harry Potter books i renounced god and took up w/a cult that practices witchcraft and black magic. that wasn't even the worst part. all the other witches and wizards were 11 year old orphans, shunned by society, now working for evil. who knew?

The only reason I saw this movie is because everyone was reading the books, how foolish I was. I hated this movie because it was boring and uninteresting. The plot was pathetic and simplistic.I wish in these childish movies that good lost againest evil for once so they wouldnt bother me with the next movie.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I have not read any of the Harry Potter books, but I did not need too. I've seen the first two movies and they are two masterpieces. They will go down in history as classics. The movie is a pure cinematic gem that will take you into a world of wonderment and awe. Daniel Radcliffe is superb as Harry Potter who can act just as well as the veteran actors he's working with which include Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman Robbie Coltrane and Rex Harris. The other child actors Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are a delight. The story is terrific about a boy who grew up in a rather abusive home who discovers he is something special. Only more terrific than that, he doesn't flaunt it or abuse it, there is a great deal of humanity in Harry Potter. Story is superb, special effects will leave you in awe, characters are memorable and it's a movie one will want to watch again and again.

I would have to respect the attempt at living upto the genius of the book itself but the movies will always fall short of J.K Rowling's written word. Personally, there is absolutely no inclination to catch these movies as they take the world by storm with all their special effects and rich enactments of what the books are all about. Advice: Go get the books before you catch the film.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I liked this movie well enough. Having to once again sift through fans who unfairly compare it to the books is a bit annoying however. The only thing that matters from book to movie is whether the overall essence and feel is there. Picking apart areas where it differs misses the point of how difficult making a movie or writing a book is. Not to mention making one from the other. As a movie this was very entertaining and well acted in most every respect. Being the first film of several it is inevitably mired in points that are not fully interesting. Harrys step parents, although integral to his background, are boring and so are the early movie events spent there. Having seen many better sci-fi fantasy movies I find it hard to give this a 5. It is very good but not quite at the premier status.

Not just a film for kids. This one can be enjoyed by all ages. It's fairly faithful to the original story, and the actors are all wonderful in their roles and most importantly, they all look like they are having a great time. The special effects are wonderful too. They not only look realistic, but they also serve the story instead of overshadow it. And the deal about satanism--forget it. It's not there.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I was a bit hesitant to rent this movie and even more hesitant to watch it because of all the publicity it got (I hate it when movies manage to abuse the amount of attention it can possibly get) but I ended up liking it. Perhaps it was the character Snape that intrigued me the most because he was the most mysterious of them all and mystery is an attractive thing (so is Alan Rickman). Ugly with hediously greasy hair? I think not. I had to keep on rewinding his scenes. I really hope I see more of him in the next films. Too bad the story circles around Harry Potter rather than him.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I saw the movie before I got into the books, so perhaps that's why I loved it. It was original, imaginative, funny, and... British. I've always been fascinated with the Brits, and I think the decision to have a British cast was the right one. It kept the feel of the books, and the actors were superb! Of course they left some things out, but there would be no way to have every single detail fit into a 2 1/2 hour film. Anyway, this movie led me to read all the books and I'm now a potter freak.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

As someone whose family won't normally watch movies of books with, I was impressed. I spent my time watching this movie in an environment devoid of my usual complaints about adapations. Truely, the changes were few, and needed in many cases. Of course I would have liked to see each character have the shining moments they have in the books, but in the grand scheme of things who is more important -- Ron or Percy Weasly? The movie was 2 1/2 hours as it was! I must, however, refrain from a 5 star rating due to their copious use of computer generated characters etc. Whenever a CGI character appears on the screen, I immediately lose my suspension of disbelief or, alternately, feel like I am watching "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." I am aware that it was best for some things (flying on brooms seemed to be one of the better applications), but why was the grass in the Qudditch field animated? And do we need CGI to make owls fly? All in all, I was enchanted. Drawn in by the same magic that caused me to devour all the books and beg for more.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This was a very good movie that captured all of the images that were in my head from reading the books..however, for some reason, it lost some of the magic for me. I am a Harry Potter/J.K. Rowling fan and have read the series of books several times. Every aspect on screen lived up to my imagination..that was definitely the Dumbledore, Hagrid, Harry..troll etc..in my head..however to see them up on the screen somehow tainted the experience for me. However, if I am to just rate the movie, I would have to say it is excellent. The acting is genuine, the special effects spectacular and the overall message is warm and triumphant. However, if you are a big fan of the books, the movie may lose a bit of the magic for you..for reasons I can not explain! Also, I have read the books to my children (sons, ages 4 and 5) and we did bring them to see the movie. My husband and I decided that if it got to be too much (too scary or too long..2 1/2 hours) we would simply leave. However, we did not leave and the boys loved seeing on screen all of the people and events that had taken place in their imaginations while reading the books (having the books read to them, they are not child prodigies). So, as far as the age guidelines, you really need to assess on an individual basis, I do know 4 and 5, even 8 or 9 year olds who may not find the movie entertaining. Overall, a great movie and honorable message and a wonderful 2 and 1/2 hour escape from realities into the world of Hogwarts.

REALLY, REALLY don't see what the hype is with this movie. I saw it, and just kept going through my checklist of things to expect until the long three hours were over. I've read the books, and maybe it's the fact that I can't stand to see or read anyhting twice but this movie didn't do a thing for me. Only reason I suppose I'm giving it a two is because I feel that maybe I would have enjoyed it had I not already known the story.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I would have preferred the film to be twice as long, but all in all the cuts are justified - especially as far as the weakest part of the book, i.e. the first few chapters (too kitsch) are concerned. The casting is excellent - Coltrane as Hagrid is ideal, for instance - in spite of the tendency to choose actors and (in the case of Emma Watson as Hermione, at least) actresses which are too good-looking. A particularly glaring case ist the casting of Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. Now, I am not the kind of persons who gets crushes on actors, but still... In all four volumes Snape is decribed as positively revolting - not just ugly but quite unappetizing. References to his greasy hair abound. Now, I suppose the make-up people could have provided Alan Rickman with sallow skin and an abnormally long nose but they certainly didn't. So why did Rowling choose him, anyway, as I understand she did? Because of the "silky voice" in which Snape proffers his sarcastic comments? Or because she realized that, as P.G.Wodehouse put it in "Pigs have Wings", nothing is quite as scary as a dressy assassin? Or has she changed her mind about Snape? Anyway, the "new and improved" (beyond all recognition, in fact) Snape is extremely convincing as well as elegant, in an austere kind of way. I hope that if Rowling kills him off (and I have the sneaking suspicion that she will, eventually) she will at least wait until the end of the last volume.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I enjoyed this movie. I liked the books, they were entertaining and that is how I would rate the film as well. I guess it's a personal preference issue but a few of the special effects didn't work for me. I mean it's great what can be done with animation now, but when the figure clearly isn't in the same space as the surrounding environment I can always spot it and it always bugs me. I would rather see real actors on brooms hanging from cables than be able to see the computer generated faces of people that don't exist in the same scene with real actors, I don't buy it and it distracts me. I think that is what makes Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone a great kids movie and an OK adult movie but kids are pretty sophisticated now and I know many older kids that noticed the effects issue too. Thank goodness the imagination is so rich that cinema can rarely compete, that's why there will always be a call for good books.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is definitely worth seeing in the theater. I was blown away by J.K. Rowling's incredible imagination and her ability to step into a child's mind. The special effects are spectacular, and there are delightful surprises sprinkled throughout the show. My only complaint is that the movie focused primarily on boys and reinforced boy/girl stereotypes to a certain degree, which I suppose is no big surprise. It was very annoying, for example, when Harry Potter broke the rules on one occasion and then again with his sidekick, and the behaviors were rewarded. On the other hand, when the main female character (Hermione) did the same, she was punished. Hermione was initially portrayed as an uptight, goody-two-shoes sort who got by because she studied compulsively, whereas Harry Potter was just naturally talented. Finally, most of the other children in the movie were boys. I appreciated the way that Hermione emerged as a stronger character as the movie progressed, though. On a final note, I think this movie is appropriate for very mature second-graders and up. I definitely wouldn't take young children to see it due to many scary scenes and the length of the show (about two-and-a-half hours).

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This is one of the best movies out. When it first came out I was one of those people who was like OH GOD , more Harry Potter, but I was very surprised. I LOVED it, cause its not just a kids movie. I still though dont understand it when people say it makes kids want to practice witchcraft. Also people say it tells lies, well c'mon, its a fairytale type book & movie. That means some things in the book are gonna be fake, just like the fairytales adults heard when they were little, not everyhting in those stories are true. But anywayz....its a really good movie. I reccomend going to see it, & if you dont wanna spend the money for it in the theaters (cause movies in theaters are so expensive now), rent it when it comes out on video. Its surprisingly really good!!Some parts in the movie arent all good for little little kids, like in one part, I cant believe they swore, I was like huh, what did he just say? :) Oh & the main little girl in the movie (cant think of her name right now) is really cute!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Lucky enough to see it the night before it opened. I loved it. It is amazing how some of the things in the movie looked exactly as I imagined them to. Diagon Alley for example was almost a perfect match, as was Gringott's. Hogwarts itself was very different from what I imagined, but it was very cool. I loved the moving staircases! The actors all perfectly conveyed their characters, and I especially liked Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as Harry, Hermione and Ron. Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid was wonderful and they could not have picked a better Dumbledore or Snape! I do have only one concern though. The book was about 150 pages, the movie was about 2.5 hours... What happens when we get to "Goblet of Fire" at 750 pages? In all, I highly recommend this movie!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I found this movie very entertaining. It was the best work that Christopher Columbus has done in a long while, with beautiful, sweeping cinematography(as someone mentioned before, I think), inspired casting, and great special effects. Having never read the books, I'm sure I missed a lot(as one always does when they see a movie adapted from a book or something of that sort.), but I still found the movie very charming. I would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys films of the cute and mindless persuasion. I wanna be a wizard. (Not a witch..I will transcend the unfair gender stereotypes.)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter was a great movie. the casting was good, and it was good how they stuck to the book. Harry Potter is a 11 year old boy who spent all his years living with his mean Aunt,Uncle,And cousin. things change when he recives an invitation to Hogwarts where he meets New Friends and enimies and becomes a wizard. good film. the only problems are the film was too long and there are a few dark and scary scenes. but it was still a great family movie.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I would really give this a 4.5. Harry Potter is a great family movie. Taken from the Book by the same name it is a very imaginative story. a young boy who was orphaned as a baby has lived with his horrible aunt, uncle and cousin until at age 11 he finds out he is a wizard. he goes to To Hogwarts to learn to be a wizard and meets new friends Ron, and Hermione. I won't go into anymore detail but I would say this is a great movie to see as a family. There are a few scary scenes, and it is too long. I liked the fact that they stuck with an all british cast especially the child actors. Daniel Radcliff was terrific as Harry.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The movie's cinematography was beautiful, the pictures were well captured in telling the story. However, I could tell the story dwindled with the certain lack of elements. I really love the books, and when I got out of the theatre, I wasn't quite as happy as I was excited months ago. I was also a bit bothered by the lighting, too much of dark scenes that the light gets blinding. What I loved about it thou' is the emphasis on the values of the story and the Quidditch scene! Should have been more thou...

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

what a beautiful movie. it's as fun as a movie like 'goonies' but a lot more intelligent. it's a vehicle for any kid's dreams; finding out one day you have magic powers, and getting whisked away from your humdrum life, to a world where everyone's on awe of you, and adventure and intrigue are everywhere. visually, it's perfect. the characters are totally believable, considering the unreality of their situations. i haven't read the books, but the number one complaint i hear from those who have is that too many of the details and the nuances that make rowlings such a great writer don't reach the screen, but i understand that what is there is totally faithful to the novels, and it was more than enough for me. the quidditch match has been compared to the pod race in star wars ep 1, and while i'm a die hard star wars fan, i think it's loads better. a must see.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

This movie was a great disappointment to me. Although I thought the characterization, acting, and special effects were admirable, there were several inconsistencies with the book. Idle readers may enjoy it, but die-hard Potterists like myself would do well to avoid it. There is very little adherance to detail, and one important part needed for the audience to figure out a detail is completely omitted. They also discluded characters entirely, such as Peeves the Poltergeist, or gave them miniscule parts, like Fred and George Weasley. In short, the movie is certainly less than spellbinding.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Being so faithful to the book is both the movie's strength and weakness. The movie unfolds exactly as written in the book, so there is little room for surprises or discoveries. For Potter fans, what more can you ask for?
