The Legend of Heroes

Strengths: Decent RPG with nice clean visuals for the PSP

Weakness: Starts slow, fails to stand out from the crowd

Legend of Heroes is the first of a trilogy of role playing games (RPGs) for the Sony PSP. While the trilogy improved somewhat with each iteration, the problem with the series is that it does nothing to stand out. This is a fairly typical Japanese RPG with a cliche story and characters. It does have the advantage of non-random encounters (enemies are visible in the overworld so you can avoid them if you want). The combat itself is decent enough but nothing outstanding. The biggest problem with the game is that it is very slow to get started and most of your time early on is bogged down with boring fetch quests. It does get better towards the end but there is quite a bit to slog through to get to that point. Simply put, there are much better alternatives out there for PSP RPGs at this time and unless you are an RPG fanatic that must play every one out there you will probably want to pass on this particular one.

Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion

Strengths: Great gameplay, strong story

Weakness: None

Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion is a great classic-like RPG with a old school feel. The story begins with a boy named Avin on a quest to find his sister Eimelle. Along the way he picks up useful pets that finds items for the quest and also does things for you during battles. Battles are both turn and semi-grid based.

Graphics is decent with some of the coolest effects such as water and lightning effects. It has a nice music score that plays out nicely with the gameplay. There is no voice over though. The load time is almost non-existent.

This game is not ground breaking but definitely brings forth some welcomed elements on the table. It's well worth playing.

The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion

Over the course of the year, the PSP has been littered with exceptional games in almost every genre imaginable. Lumines has remained king of the puzzlers; Madden and FIFA are carrying the load for sports fans; and Liberty City Stories has proved to action lovers that old dogs can learn new tricks, but sadly, a launch title by the name of Untold Legends is still solely responsible for all things...

It's certainly no secret that the PSP owners in the US have been anxiously awaiting a traditional RPG release now for over 8 months. Luckily, Bandai has taken the initiative and translated the second game in this popular Japanese RPG series and released it upon eager RPG fans here in the US. Exhibiting a mix of old-school RPG gameplay mechanics with a slightly updated visual presentation, not to...
