Quake 4Strengths: AI, Vehicles and Mech awesome smooth controls, game runs very smoothly with no hitches or bugs Weakness: none I loved everything about the game especially the AI which I found to be fairly intelligent. The controls, music, sound, visuals, everything was just awesome as hell to play. Love it. 60% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Great GameStrengths: Graphics, control, large varty of weapons, and good story line. Weakness: to enjoy the high end graphics you may need a powerfull pc I have to say i have never been much of a quake fan, but this game rocks the graphics, and special effects in this game are so realistic on some of the monsters that you find your self looking twice at some of them because of all the details, shadow details are killer when walking down a hall you can some time see the enemies shadow lurking around the corner this add a killer realistic effect there is so much stuff to do in this game that is cool that i think any body that likes killer first person shooter game will be happy with quake 4. 41% of readers found this review helpful. QUAKE 4
The classic franchise returns, and as usual, it's Quake's multiplayer that saves the day and will keep it on your hard drive for months to come. Top

Quake 4
“All right you maggots, haul ass or die!” “Who’s the new guy?” “Matthew Kane, one certified bad-ass.” “A guy like Kane could get us killed.” “Shut up!” Language, gratuitous violence, the horror of war – you want it, Quake 4 delivers. But unlike some games that toss all that stuff in for shock value, Quake 4 has a purpose and everything you see or hear is well with the... Top

QUAKE 4
It's a curious direction that Quake 4 has taken this time around, with the heavy emphasis on single-player, apparently at the development cost of multiplayer, previously its very selling point. And while the SP production values are certainly expensive-looking and sounding, the actual combat mechanics feel a step behind the evolution of the genre, and not in an intentionally retro way. And it's... Top

One of the most underappreciated FPS this year.
Strengths: Best graphics to date during release, Fast and True Skill based Gameplay, Immersive Single Player Campaign, re-emergence of classic fun DM Maps and a decent ingame server browser, Potential for mods
Weakness: performance problems at times (very demanding game), desperately needs a Cooperative mode for singleplayer campaign, Could have had a few more maps and some Q1 Maps and models
First off people need to realize that this game is not like DOOM3 except that it uses the DOOM3 engine. The gameplay mechanics are completely different and is more action based and fast paced. When ID passed off the torch to Raven to take on most of the development for Quake 4 I was originally a bit apprehensive. Then the low advance review score for PC gamer came out and I got even more worried. However after playing this game for 3 days now I can say that this is my favorite FPS for a long while.
The Singleplayer portion (while not completely revolutionary) has some very awesome visuals, dynamic lighting, and character models that put the halflife 2 source engine to same. The game plays relatively well on my modest PC and looks great. The gameplay is rather simple from objective to objective with some squad play in between and some decent (but not fantastic) vehicle segments. The greatest part is the immersiveness. During the first mission you are thrown into the frenzy of battle on the Strogg planet. The atmosphere is perfect with all the ambient fighting going on and you really feel like you're on the battlefield. As the game progresses it held my interest much longer than F.E.A.R. or Halflife 2 did since I really wanted to know what happened next in Quake 4. I wanted to know what happened to my other squad members or how the fight against the Strogg was going to turn out. I never felt these from playing the other 2 games. Many reviewers complained about the linearity of the singleplayer in Quake 4... But realistically just about all FPS singleplayer games are linear. I mean in Halflife 2 it was just jumping from one area to the next. It really was no different than Quake 4. The same with F.E.A.R. This is the most hypocritical part about most professional reviews which I find annoying. I just hope this review encourages people to give Quake 4 a chance and not just listen blindly to the professional reviews which have somehow found an agenda to bash on Quake 4 simply because it is not "innovative" in their eyes. Meanwhile they ignore the important factor of just how fun it is to play Quake 4 compared to the other games.
As for the multiplayer, my first impressions did not go so well. My first forray into it turned into a massive FPS drop to around 17 FPS in crowded areas and choppiness. As more servers came up I realized that much of the choppiness was due to the servers not being able enough to support the game. In many of the professional servers with around 8 player deathmatch I have been getting better framerates. However in bigger matches they will drop when you have a bunch of people on the screen (like in the Longest Day). I have found "The Rose" Map to run the best in multiplayer. As for the gameplay it really is homage to the fast action found in Quake 3 Arena. The game is a godsend for oldschool FPS gamers, like myself, that really enjoy that fast paced action. I'm sure it will turn off many newbies since they are usually used to camping or constantly crouching for aiming but I'm hoping they'll get used to it and enjoy Quake 4 for what it really is. I'm excited at the modding possibilities for the future (Rocket Arena 4 hopefully and Action Quake 4). So far the one mod I have heard about confirmed is Quake 4 Fortress which I look forward to. However there is a lack of maps as some reviewers have stated but it is no big deal. I think for out of the box it is a decent amount of maps and cover some of the old favorites from Quake 2 and 3. I would have liked to see some Quake 1 Maps though. I have no real complaints about the weapon balancing, but it seems they've toned down the power of the rocket launcher which makes me a bit sad, but I can live with it. Also a few more multiplayer models would have been nice as well. I am hoping Raven and ID will take the time to release a patch to address some performance issues as well as add a bit more content. Also I'm looking forward to what the modding community can do for this game. One big advantage that Halflife 2 had over this game is that it included a Mod with the game. It would have been nice to see ID subsidize a mod like Action quake, Rocket Arena, or fortress to launch with Quake. On another note the multiplayer levels load up very fast and efficiently unlike some other games (Ahem Battlefield 2).
All in all from the E3 presentation I attended it looks like Raven and Id delivered on everything they promised. They provdied the oldschool multiplayer which was so perfect before. They provided an immersing singleplayer experience that surpassed Quake 2 but continued that storyline. I know there will be many critics as we've seen the genre go toward more middle road and slow gameplay and realism but the Quake gameplay will always be my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I can still enjoy games like Halflife 2 , Battlefield 2, and F.E.A.R., but there is nothing yet that has replaced Quake as the best FPS series in my book.
