Great joystick at first, but...

Strengths: Durable, precise, heavy (so it doesn't slip)

Weakness: It is big and takes up some space. EDIT: Loses calibration after an year of use.

I use this joystick with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, and it's response within the program is excellent. My previous joystick before this one was a $10 generic model with an old game/MIDI port. With the USB plug, it is much easier to unplug the joystick and store it when not in use. This function is useful, since the joystick is quite big and does take up a considerable amount of desk space. The handle does twist, which gives you a new degree of control, depending on which game you play. The configuration software is easy to load, just beware: Turn down your speakers when using it, as the program makes a lot of noise when you are configuring the stick.

EDIT (5/31/06): I have had this joystick for almost 2 years now, and while it still functions well, it has lost its calibration pretty badly. I still use this stick with flight sim, and sometimes I may let go of the stick and the plane might begin making a right turn without me even touching the stick. I confirmed through the calibration settings that it was the controller that was the problem. Unfortunately, my stick is out of warranty, so I cannot have it replaced. I do plan on purchasing a new joystick soon to replace this one, as the calibration issue is very annoying for me. I probably will not purchase a logitech.
Please note that with this long-term issue in mind, I am downgrading my rating from 5-stars to 3-stars.

HOW TO CALIBRATE THE LOGITECH EXTREME 3D PRO JOYSTICK

I just figured out how to calibrate this joystick. I am using Windows XP. I assume it will work with all Windows operarting systems though.

Go to Control Panel, click on "Game Controllers", or however you get to your joystick settings. Hold down the "Ctrl" (control key) and the "Shift" key together - at the same time, THEN click your mouse on the "Properties". This should take you to a different calibration screen that you would get to without holding the two keys together. IMPORTANT - Click on the "Test" tab first. If you go to the settings tab first, it likely will not work. Without doing anything else after clicking on the "Test" tab, next click on the "Settings" tab. Then click on the "Calibrate" button below. Click "next". Click the thumb button on the left side of the joystick which should bring you to another screen. Then follow the prompts......
* On the "axis calibration", move your joystick in full circles, making sure the " " symbol moves around the far margins of the square. After a few complete circles, click the "next" button with your mouse.
* On the next screen, click the left button on the joystick again, which should bring you to the next screen. Move the throttle lever back and forth a few times. Then click "next" again.
* On the "Z rotation screen", move the joystick to the left and right (rotate it) a few times. Then click "next" and then "finish" then "ok". Thats it. It should be calibrated now. Hope this helps everyone with problems.

Never again

Strengths: Stable on my desk

Weakness: Will not hold calibration

I bought this stick specifically for FS2k4 in January. It works great for the first 20 or 30 minutes of flight; after that, things get hairy...Usually, it loses the ability to recognize full right; lean the stick over to the right, and the plane makes a very slow and deliberate right bank. Lean it left, and things work perfectly. (This is particularly frustrating when trying to line up a 777 on approach to JFK). Other times, it won't recognize Up elevator, and recently two of the buttons on the base have been unresponsive. I downloaded a patch from Logitech's website, but it says that there are no calibration problems with the stick. Un-istalling and re-installing don't help. I'm throwing this out and getting the CH Products HOTAS at the end of the month...

This joystick is definitely NO JOY!

A neat piece of junk -- Logitech is nothing but a con-artist company, if not deceptive
liars -- it says on the box that it will work with a Mac. IT DOES NOT. There is no
software for a Mac. There is no way to change anything. Firing buttons do not work.

Support does not reply. This company must be one of those many "rip-off" websites
one hears so much about.

WARNING : DO NOT BUY IT -- unless you need a club to hit muggers with.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: It was a near perfect joystick, for 2 months.

Weakness: 2 months and 2 days after I bought the movement has become twitchy and thus no longer accurate.

If the problem I am having is the same problem that Logitech users have been complaining about on their forums for SIX MONTHS it wont be long before the stick no longer detects right movement and with that totally unusable.

Great for battlefield 2, very easy to install

Strengths: very good value for the money, smooth feel & handle

Weakness: the little black botton in the middle of those 4 grey ones on the top is hard to control, could use a throttle bookmark, stops working properly after about 8 months

I bought this joystick primarily to play battlefield 2 because flying a jet with a mouse + keyboard in that game is nearly impossible and I have to say this joystick is pretty amazeing it made my flying alot easier with the throttle I only wish it had something to mark the speed or like a bookmark on the throttle instead of a slider because I usually have to change my throttle speed alot when doing bomb runs (slower throttle) then switching to dogfighting with other jets (faster throttle) and bf2 is very precise on how fast your going with the smallest difference meaning your going like 100-300 speed higher or lower ... that little black botton they have by the middle of the 4 grey ones is also pretty useless because you can very easily push it up and the botton thinks you pushed it left or right causeing you to perform the wrong function so I just dont use that botton. The grey botton on the side I use to drop bombs and the front fire botton to shoot at targets with your guns then you can set the 4 grey top bottons to switch weapons from bombs to missles, flares, and afterburners (for tighter turns). The other ones on the bottom of the joystick are commonly used to switch cameras when your flying a jet or to switch seats.

The joystick was very easy to install just plug it in and go to your battlefield 2 controls then twist the joystick in the direction you want when assigning the keys :) no special software needed at all

I would highly recommend this joystick to other gamers :) it sure improved my flying

Edit: After about 8 months my joystick no longer worked as it did when i purchased it, the joystick would have problems when moveing it left or right and it constatly moved my plane to the left even when I wasnt touching the handle at all ... It was a great when it actually worked but im not going to be buying another one for $40 or so id rather buy a joystick that is more reliable from a different company

I have owned 5 Logitech Joysticks so far. All have only lasted 8-13 months each. Including my force feedback stick. They are very good while they last, except as others have mentionmed, the hat switch at the top of the stick. You get what you pay for. I thought I would try a different brand so I got a Saitek ST290 Pro. The trigger only lasted 7 weeks. Back to Logitech.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: it has none

Weakness: When it dies a few weeks after I got it, I couldn't even get a response from the company

When you first start to fly, it works good, then it's like you unplugged it. You have no control at all. and the only thing it will do is eventually crash. It's a piece of junk, and the company won't even respond when I ask where I should throw it away at. I wouldn't buy from Logitech again if they paid me.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: AWESOME PAPERWEIGHT!!

Weakness: does not calibrate, tried numerous drivers, but my ship still spins. do not buy

This thing keeps all my papers right square on the desk. It's expecially handy in hurricane season, when the wind picks up it has a conveinient handle that I can hold to keep it still. The real slick thing about this paperweight is that it has four specially designed rubber feet so you can hold four, count 'em four stacks of paper in place. I've also heard rumors that this is actually a joystick but you know what they say about rumors.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Good action in stick, no blank spots

Weakness: constuction plastic, but isn't everything

I found the stick to be responsive and a good value for the money. Considering the base price, it handles very well. The stick has all the services needed for a flight simulator program and the usb connection makes it an easy plugin for modern computers.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Great looking joystick with a clean exterior and smooth movements across the board. Good balance and lots of buttons to program for your favorite game.

Weakness: The throttle takes some getting used to as I previously used a Microsoft Precision.

I would highly recommend this product. Although it was recently purchased, I have put through some tests. A nice combination form, functionality, and desirable price mark. Thumbs up!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Great design and look. Great feel.

Weakness: Not quite as sharp as the upper end sticks but for the money it is worth it.

If you are looking for a stick that is a good value this is it. The price is great for what you get but you dont quite get the quality that an extra $30-50 would buy you. For my needs its great!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Comfortable. Good action and feel. Excellent software.

Weakness: None that I have found.

Using with MS Flight Sim 2004, Windows XP.
Bought this to replace an old joystick (Logitech WingMan) that required a game port (something not found, obviously, on newer computers). For a while, being sort of cheap, I looked around for a USB to gameport adapter; found a couple; but elected not to buy one, as support for old joysticks is questionable at best under XP. Very glad I didn't cheap out; for the new joystick looks better, feels better, and responds much better.
The software loaded with no problems at all and required no alignment before use - a big change from the old days. Flight Sim auto recognized the device and played flawlessly.
Have read a few reviews, here and there, that complained about the wide 'null' zone in the stick action. Don't know what they're talking about. First, the default settings seem just fine; and on top of that, the null zones are adjustable. So what's the problem?
Force feedback not required for flight sim software; no loss here.
I do have one complaint, however. For all us old folk who have trouble seeing and remembering stuff, it would be very nice of they would clearly label the plethora of programable buttons, with nice, large, easy to read numbers. The pictoral representations on each button are useless if you can't see them clearly. This is a minor issue, however, and is not sufficient to detract from a 5 star rating.
All in all, can't complain about anything; you plug it in and it works, nearly perfectly.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Smooth, responsive control; excellent range of motion; easy to install; comfortable during extended play.

Weakness: Awkwardly placed throttle and buttons on base; throttle a bit too small; no-slide rubber pads would have been nice for that polished cherry computer desk.

A decent joystick for gamers on a budget who want to actually have any measure of control of that P-51 in Battlefield 1942 but can't quite afford the better yet considerably more expensive (and less portable) Thrustmaster HOTAS system. Hard-core flight sim gurus will probably want to hold out for the Thrustmaster HOTAS, but for the average gamer who doesn't commit the majority of his gaming time to piloting simulated craft this handy joystick will prove more than adequate.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Extremely accurate with a great touch!

Weakness: None that I have found

In my opinion this is the best joystick for the money! The only other joystick I would buy is the Microsoft Sidewinder, but it 3 to 4 times the money and the quality is about the same! I have tried numerous cheap joysticks and returned all of them! Up until this joystick, nothing even compared to my old ragged out Sidewinder. This my second Logitech Extreme 3D! I am buying one for my son to replace my old Microsoft Sidewinder that I passed on to him. I use this joystick to play Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam, and I don't think you can beat it for the money!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Excellent stick action.

Weakness: Button durability.

The stick was excellent at first, and it was a steal for the price. Then it started breaking. First it was the hat switch, after only a month. Then after playing with it for 3 months, most of the buttons I use frequently, have started to fail. Even the trigger is broken. If you don't game very often this will be a decent controller for you, but if you game a lot you will need a new one before too long.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Plenty of buttons and everything that is needed for flight simulators.

Weakness: None

Installation took around 5 minutes. Nice design and very confortable; sturdier than other models. Worked perfectly with IL2 Sturmovik and BF 1942 and the games play completely different with this stick. I made some research before buying this model and it seems to be the mid point between value and high-performance. Recommended!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Sturdy, solid, good 'feel' in your hand

Weakness: No decent sim games out there anymore to necessitate the purchase of such a good joystick

I bought this joystick for two reasons: 1. New computers (motherboards) only support USB joysticks now and 2. the numerous positive reviews for this joystick.

If you are picky about choosing joysticks, give this one a serious look. It is sturdy and heavy. The rubber on the joystick's base grips the playing surface very well. Not much more you could ask for in a joystick that doesn't provide force feedback. Now, if they would only come out with a great space sim again, like XvT or Freespace 2, I would be able to finally break it in properly.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Ease of use, simple design, comfort

Weakness: installation was not trouble free

I had some initial unpleasantness in the installation on my Compaq Presario 5002US with Win Me. After a couple of false starts, I got the installation to complete successfully. Since then we've enjoyed this addition to our home computer. My 11 and 8 year-olds' first encounter with a joystick is going swimmingly; the 11-year old in particular is having no trouble calibrating and customizing it to the various games he enjoys. Highly recommended for kids.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Very nicely designed, and solidly built. It has many features and is a very good value.

Weakness: It feels a little stiff (though very nicely linear, and smooth), regarding its motion. However, this likely has more to do with the fact that it's new.

A VERY nice joystick! I also have a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro...which cost me about 60 bucks. This offers a similar level of performance...for half the money (delivered to my house). How can you beat that?!!!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Stable, heavy, lots of buttons

Weakness: takes up a lot of space, but the large base adds stability.

I've only had this joystick for a day, but I can tell that it is better than other joysticks that I have used in the past. It has 12 buttons, a throttle, directional pad, and z-axis (the joystick twists). The buttons are all easily accessible. The large base and heavy weight gives it a lot of stability so that it won't tip or move around during fast paced games. I recommend this product if you're looking for a good joystick for a low price.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: The programmable buttons are great! The twist handle is realistic while flying combat missions.

Weakness: The throttle controller should have a longer thumb control.

This good looking joystick is a pleasure to use in combat flying missions and flight simulators. The buttons are numerous, well positioned and programmable. It is a great advance over my original Wingman Warrior Logitech joystick whose footprint which was too large and heavy. The twist handle adds realism and the 8 way rubber hat is terrific to use!

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Just about every control you could want. Works smoothly.

Weakness: Pretty large base.

For my flight simulator/flight combat type of games, this joystick has been outstanding. My major problem is that with this many buttons, I have trouble remembering what I've keyed them to be...but I'm sure I'll get over that.

Overall, great product so far.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Durable, Handles nicely, Works pretty good for a "lefty."

Weakness: none so far.

We got this joystick to use with our "Need for Speed" games. So far it's really great. It feels tight when you steer, but not *too* tight. Really feels sturdy and durable--good quality. Lots of buttons to help you set up your controls just the way you want. We looked at more expensive joysticks, but this one really impressed me and I'm glad I got this one.

Et Tu Logitech

Strengths: Stabile

Weakness: Loses calibration after a few weeks never to be found again

Save your money. A very poor product from a company I'd till this point come to trust. It's broken as far as joysticks are concerned. Losing calibration is an understatement if you use this controller you are less playing a game as along for the ride.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro sucks

Strengths: good hand grip design

Weakness: the program that comes with it, you can not use it to calibrat, can not preform slow right turn! it keep spining forever to the right

can not preform slow right turns, every time try to make a slow right turn the airplane start to spin right side forever, tried to calibrat it so many times, but same thing happens again.i am not sure if this is a factory defect or not other wise everything is working fine with it.

Lawrence

Strengths: It is a great stick, love the layout, lots of buttons, nice feel...

Weakness: The rudder does not stay calibrated, I replaced it with two other sticks, they all did the same thing after very little use, after a few months the slow turn to the right developed.

This would be an awesome stick if Logitech would do their homework and fix the calibration problems. save your money and get a used MS Precision Pro 2 or other stick...

Strengths: has lots of buttons

Weakness: everything else

like others, my stick has stopped turning to the right. this is the 3rd one ive had. the first one snapped off while i was trying to turn my stuka to the right in a fight. the second didnt turn right straight out of the box so i returned it, and the third one was ok for about a year and now its failed in the same manner.

UGH! Good AND BAD

Strengths: When I first bought it, it was the best thing since sliced bread for air combat with it's excelent linear accuracy...when i first bought it that is.

Weakness: A few months down the road there came calibration issues. Over sensitive, breathe on it and it jumps all over the place. twist right rudder no longer works for me, it just twitches.

very compfortable, great price for the product, however is it worth it if you have to replace it a few months down the road? MAJOR calibration issues, very accurate when it is calibrated but it falls out of calibration quickly. It broke with time and the right rudder no longer works. I love the stability of it with the large base. the buttons feel great. the throttle could use some work. I am left with mixed feelings which still bug me. Will I buy another? I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! maybe though, after I let off some steam. B E S U R E T O B U Y A S T O R E W A R R A N T Y!!!!! I WISH I HAD!!!!

Xp vs. Other Systems

Strengths: Looks Nice. Lots of shiny buttons. Space age design. Holds paper down. USB plug

Weakness: Will not load on certain PC's. Horrible tech support. Logitech admits it is a bad product. Made my bald spot larger (I know, that is personal)

I purchased this joystick just because it looks space age cool, eat your heart out Buzz Aldrin. After a week of attempting to install, download, kick at, and swear at I could not make the joystick work. 2 phone calls to Logitech, 4 e-mail responses later and still - no tickee, no washee. The nice people tried to help me but Logitech admits the software has an issue. They will glady exchange this model for another model. Unfortunately, the other models use the same software so the same same problem will arise. Even if it works at first the lean to the left, lean the right stand up, sit down, crash to the ground problem develops. While I am sure some people will never develop problems the vast majority will. I asked one of the reps at Logitech how many complaints the get from this new product line and he said, and I quote, "a lot" unquote. I am sending mine back and going to a different manufacturer.

Never get shot down

Strengths: Automatic evasive mode

Weakness: Couldn't keep an airplane flight straight

Although I only fly MSFS2004, I bet air combat pilots are gonna love this thing because it got an automatic evasive mode that you'd never heard of.

Once activated after 2 months of use, the joystick is going to fly the airplane in a zig zag mode that automatically evade enemy missiles and gun shots without even touching it. It does the job so well that the enemies (and you) could never dream of your maneuvers and never get a lock on. It also have a learning functionality that the more you fly, the better it maneuvers.

What? Did I hear somebody asking about landing? Don't you know to deactivate the auto evasive mode by pulling out its USB plug and land by keyboard, dude?

Strengths: Large stable base. Handle very comfortable.

Weakness: None so Far

I've been using this joystick for two months. I replaced my Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 since after buying the Logitech I'm never going to use the Sidewinder again. The weighted base makes it unlike other joystick I have used because it keeps the joystick very stable during play.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: USB-based; many buttons; solid feel

Weakness: might be a bit stiff for some (but I like it)

This joystick is easy to install, and since it is USB-based, it doesn't require a gameport, which many computers no longer have. It has a large number of buttons, which is great for many games. Additionally, while it might be a bit stiff for some people's tastes, I think it has a nice solid feel.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: This is a very good joystick in my opinion.

Weakness: nothing at all

Unlike joysticks by other brands, this logitech joystick gave me a very good control. even i only own this for few days, i love it so much. there are also 12 buttons on the joystick which surely gives you enough keys. You must love this once you've tried it. It's probably one of the best joystick right now.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Easy to install and calibrate, lots of buttons, works well, looks good, great value for the price.

Weakness: No force feedback, but that really is a nice to have and not essential for good gaming.

I had a Logitech Wingman Extreme for many years that finally died on me, so I went shopping and found this nice joystick for less than what I remember getting the last one for. The buttons are similar to the original Wingman Extreme, except that there are lots more (to fit every game out there I'm sure). The throttle is more like the Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 and positioned closer toward the bottom than the side, which is slightly different not too difficult to get used to. I've been using this with Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries for the last several days with no problems at all. I hope it lasts as long as my last Logitech joystick. Highly recommended.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick

Strengths: Excellent button layout, loads of buttons, cool design and useful software. Very sturdy as well.

Weakness: A tad stiff.

This joystick has it all: lots of of buttons, cool design, great software, and it's well-built. I'm using it to play Halo and all of my other shooters; it doesn't miss a beat. The handle is a bit stiff and takes some getting used to if you're a Sidewinder user like I am. I highly recommend this joystick to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive, quality joystick.
