Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Great swashbuckling space sci-fi movie. The special effects really set the tone for anything to follow. Really a kid's movie, I enjoyed it very much as an adult taking my children to see it when it was first released. I think this was the best of the series although the special effects improved with each succeeding film.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

The birth of a totally new and exciting culture. Imagination left free to explore the utmost regions of the galaxy. A mixture of races of different colors, sizes and shapes. A masterpiece of what a simple storyline can become when state of the art special effects are pushed to the limit. The world was never the same after this phenomenon. Loved by young and old and everything in between.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

This intentionally cheesy franchise has a main villain with crooked eyewear and flashing LED's and panels on his torso that remind one of an Atari game system, a high tech calculator and some sort of children's toy for boys from the late 80's. The pace and directing aren't as good as V and VI but they're still better than the prequels. The acting is the least visceral in IV. In fact, being the first, IV still had a lot of bugs to work out. Alec Guiness had a huge impact and managed to turn Lucas's lead writing into gold.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

As a child who adored Star Trek, I felt that Star Wars tried to take the humans-in-space concept in a much more conservative and apocalyptic direction. It tried to take my nerd culture into the mainstream. Let's not mince words here. Star Wars is a massively pretentious piece of shit. So pretentious that it presents itself as a "modern myth." It gets no points for its strong special effects either, since the big budget was everything. Star Trek was a hell of a lot funnier and more imaginative even if some of the planets looked like some grade schooler had made them from the styrofoam left over from his solar system project.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Star Wars (original and first movie) is absolutely the best sci-fi movie of all times (and i have seen a lot of sci fi movies). It is also parent and kid-friendly. The special effects are what launched so many other movies that followed. It shall always be a classic in my mind !!

This is my favorite of eposides 4-6 (the only ones that matter). Needless to say but I'm going to say it anyway because I just woke up and my brain is in limbo, this movie is an absolute classic and a must-own.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

The only film of the bunch that stands up well on its own, the others play entirely as chapters of the serial. It is also the one that captures the original spirit of a swashbukling adventure played out in outer space. The series became bogged down by its serious intentions of epic story telling with the next film. The first one was a great old fashioned Saturday afternoon matinee type movie.

This movie (Episode IV) follows the recent "Revenge of The Sith" in the Star Wars saga. It was the first movie and in some respects maybe the best but "Empire" has the edge IMO.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

When I was a child I thought this movie was just about the coolest thing ever. It had cool laser fights and Darth Vader and space ships and Chewbacca and a princess and a cool magic "force". Seeing it again recently, I was struck by the movie's actual weaknesses. Like the crappy acting, and the shallow plot, and the stupid dialogue. The seventies haircuts are awesome, though.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Alright, I'll admit it. I'm a Star Wars geek, although granted I don't have a room in my house dedicated to it and I didn't sleep on the sidewalk to get tickets to the latest three travesties. That being said, I do love Star Wars. Despite mediocre acting and special effects that are now considered laughable, I find myself still enjoying it. Its uncomparable to other sci-fi flicks because it started the genre and is still the hallmark of the genre. Its fun, entertaining and has made George Lucas a ridiculously wealthy man.

Great, but he should release the unmodified films too

Strengths: What can you say? This is one of the greatest films of all time for the reasons many others here have mentioned.

Weakness: I sure wish Lucas would release an unmodified version of all three film prints-- no re-scoring, no insertion of Anakin as a young man, no new f/x, etc.

These are great films. If you haven't seen them, or if it has been some years, you really should check them out. The story holds up to the point that it is still very entertaining to kids today, just like it was to my generation. Highly recommended.

This flick is the best of the lot. It establishes the genre. Now I'll admit that the first sequel or two weren't that bad, but overall this was the climax of the entire gaggle six movies. The last three were indifferent to stinker.

Not my very favoritest of all time. I'm not really a si-fi fan because too much of the time the acting is over done and this seems to ring true about Star Wars too, although I expect to be pummeled for having said such a thing. I will admit Harrison Ford looked mighty nice in these movies, though.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

I will start by saying What I say here is THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH!! I have seen the original motion picture in the theaters OVER 500 times. There is a witness though I have not seen him since the release of ESB. Anyway.... This is in fact was the GREATEST motion Picture Ever made up until 1981's Empire Strikes Back. Now I am not a huge fan of Ep I, II , III looks like Mr. Lucas is reverting back to yesteryear with Story and tale telling. All those who did not care for it, I cannot fault you. IF you were not 7-12 years old when this movie first came out YOU have truly missed a great ride. Unfortunately NOW you are stuck with the likes of JAR JAR Binks.... You get the picture though...

I really really tried to like this movie. But I didn't. My partner is so into Star Wars and I wanted to share that passion. But I just can't seem to understand the fascination. The effects were nice for that time, the acting was acceptable but that's it. I think not watching it when I was a child plays into the fact, that I don't care for this movie.

The best in the series and the best movie ever! When you see the words STAR WARS at the beginning and you hear that music than you know your watching a classic. If you don't like this movie then I have pity on you!

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

As a kid I saw it 12 times, 3 times back to back (we kept sneaking back in). As an adult I learned about the archetypal symbolism of the characters, the story, and the settings; how the leading archetypal psychologist, Joseph Campbell contributed to the screenplay, and then Star Wars took on new meaning for me. Star Wars is a hero's myth, updated for our time, it speaks to us because the characters represent aspects in all of our psyches. Another great thing about Star Wars, the advancement of special effects through Industrial Light and Magic. This film broke new ground, is a classic, and will most likely be popular from now on, like Shakespear.

The second best of the Star Wars trilogy. The characters were well-represented in Mark Hamill, Harrisson Ford and Carrie Fisher and the scenery and effects were excellent for their time. It's only flaw is the beginning, which is a little tedious.

Great Movie, I liked how C3PO and R2D2 walk the desert on the planet for a good quarter of the movie, it gives you a chance to understand and get to know them and there humor better for later on in the movies. It makes you think a little bit, it is simple in parts, but still very complete and perfect.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Hands down, my favorite series of movies of all time. I happen to prefer The Empire Strikes Back, but that's probably because it was the first one I saw in the theater (when I was barely 5 years old). This has all of the elements of a great story and its characters come across as "real," unlike the new prequels. The special effects were stunning for the time - and still are. The restored version (not the updated, expanded version) is amazing. It blows away any of the new CG graphics for its realism and believability. If you can't find it in your heart to at least enjoy Star Wars, I believe you have no soul.

This is simply the best film ever made. No other movie has made such an impact on me. When I was little I just sat in front of an old black and white tv with a cheap old VCR and watched Star Wars twenty times a day. I still love to watch it. I must've seen it a thousand times, literally.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

The mother of all sci fi movies. Really is about World War 2. The Empire / Rebel conflict parallels the Axis / Allies. The Millenium Falcon is just a B52, and Han a bomber pilot. Notice how the locales translate to the arenas the war was fought: the deserts of Africa, the forests of the Ardennes and Europe, and the tundra of Russia. We get tanks, squadron fighters, the bushido code of the Japanese, the polished techno-evil of the Nazis, the terrorizing, hypnotic power of Adolf Hitler (very similar-sounding to Darth Vader), and throughout, the mysticism of Judeo-Christianity, i.e. the plight of the chosen ones. Luke and Leia are Biblical / Semitic names. Of course, when I was 8, all I saw at the time was the greatest spectacle I ever experienced in a movie theater. It completely changed my life, and I understood what movies are supposed to be about. Lucas really did something special with this film. But the underlying text would make an interesting thesis though. Amazing how many people don't like my comments - what is it u don't like - my thesis? My love for the movie? I'm not saying the plot is about WW2 - just that great movies have many resonant layers underneath their plots, and Star Wars reminds me of WW2 images. Lucas himself admits to this. I really wanted to be Luke as a kid - had a big crusj on Leia and the headbuns! I loved her feistiness. One of the few movies I attended in a theater where the Dolby wowed me w/out scaring the crap outta me and where u felt a connection w/ the other people in the audience. Nothing like the 1st time. I actually was the only kid on my block in love w/ Star Wars - everyone else was into sports - SW ushered in the whole love of video games we currently enjoy. What a magical time to be a kid. I hate to disagree w/ anything lukskywlkr said because he's very much correct, but SW was not the 1st blockbuster - I think Jaws qualified 1st for that. Seemed like Lucas & Spielberg had a competition going at the time. Lucas was more my fave, but Spielberg was great too, until ET (sorry - I'm not feeling that movie). I don't know why people of all ages love this movie except that Lucas just knew what was up. I remember thinking LIKE a director after I was it too - I'd simulate space battle scenes in bed ( and tick off my sister & parents) and we'd play-act the movie too. The pacing of that movie is near-perfect. Can almost mouth the script back scene by scene, word for word. Loved Lucas' gimmickry, his technical skill - all very masculine stuff, yet he got lots of women on the same page - very, very cool. Maybe not the MOST important film, but definitely one of the top 10 most important films of all time. Modern sci-fi popularity owes much to SW. Love the Buck Rogers narration too - I'm getting goosebumps just reliving it.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

One of the most unique and exciting openings in movie history. The character development area that follows the opening is a lull and not very entertaining. It remains significant to the overall story arc and the dialogue, though not stellar, is alright. Once the background information is set up it takes off and never lets up. From the moment they get in the speeder and find the jawa ship it is a marvel of movie making. The effects are magnificent for the late 70s and the pace and plot unmatched by any movie ever made prior. Although it was not a truly original story when fully picked apart it was the best version of a good versus evil type possibly ever made. The best and most influential sci-fi movie I have ever scene. The only significant flaw is acting that was not always as good as the script and overall quality of the movie. But each character did manage to come to life quite well and a real sense of adventure and peril did shine through. Argueably one of the best villains of all time in any movie or genre. This movie had it all... Adventure, romance, comedy, feeling, heart, unmatched special effects, great story and execution... the list goes on and on. It is loved by so many and for so many different reasons. My personal choice for best movie of all time, although there are a few that come close. THE must own sci-fi movie and series. If you haven't seen it your life is not complete.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Without a doubt, the most important film of the last half of the 20th century. This brought film-making into a whole new light. Completely changed the way the film industry handled movies. It created the term "summer blockbuster" and also made film merchandising almost as important as the film itself (this isn't always a good thing). What really makes it fantastic for me is that it takes me back to childhood. I was shy of nine years old when it came out, and I didn't have any idea it was the enormous success that it turned out to be. I just knew I loved it. We acted out scenes from the movie and had hours of fun doing it. My cousin, who wasn't nearly as well-versed in the Star Wars script as I was, would take my direction, and we would act out the swing to safety scene, and we would have lightsaber battles using small tree branches when necessary. All the while, I was telling her what to say and what to do. A director's work is hard. Anyway, we had so much fun doing it, and it's all because of that movie. Now, when I mention Star Wars people role their eyes at me, because they think that's all I like to talk about. They aren't totally wrong about that, I must admit. There is an acquaintance of mine who turns her nose up whenever I mention the words "Star Wars". What I don't tell her is that I wouldn't mention them nearly as much if she wouldn't act that way. She acts like Star Wars is some weird thing that nobody gets but me. I try to explain to her the billions of dollars in ticket sales and she says it's only because of people like me. She can't get it through her thick head that people of all races, creeds and colors like Star Wars. I've met people in toy stores who had grandchildren, and I said very innocently "your grandchildren will love that", and they say "we're not buying it for our grandchildren, we're buying it for us!" Star Wars appeals to people of all ages too, I guess. Anyway, Star Wars to me is a wondrous film, and I hate to think of what life would be like without it.

I think this is one of these films which is highly overated. Its like they filmed the whole thing with brown nylon over the lense of the camera. I don't hate this film but I don't love it either...it has only become a classic because of the new Star Wars films that have been released recently. This is a film to watch to pass the time but definitely NOT a classic

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Although not as good as Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace and the masterful Attack of the Clones, the first one is still a good-quality sci-fi movie. With great special effects (especially for the time), good acting from then-unproven actors including carpenter Harrison Ford. The Death Star rocks, but the plot does slow at times. Chewbacca and the droids, are of course, really funny. The soundtrack, by John Williams, is great.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

If Star Wars were thrown into Middle Earth, the world of Lord of the Rings, it would not be the high art of Tolkien’s elves – rather it is the more mundane entertainment of hobbits, to be enjoyed in the comfort of home and friends, with a fairly basic story of good and evil to be told and retold. Its tale is the stuff of legend, repeated over and over through the ages. Its heroes were preceded by others such as Arthur and Lancelot, or Robin Hood; its fair maiden needing rescue – Guinevere, or Maid Marian; the sage old man of magic – Merlin; Darth Vader and the Evil Empire – Arthur’s Saxon enemies, the Sheriff of Nottingham and his soldiers. It’s the tiny but brave force facing seemingly invincible foes – like David and Goliath. Joseph Campbell used Luke Skywalker as an example of his hero quest, repeated over and over in mythology. As well as the appeal of familiarity, there are, I think, a couple of other reasons for the tremendous success of Star Wars and its sequels. First of all, when it was released, the special effects were unsurpassed, stunning most who saw the movie. Its casting was inspired – young unknowns like Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher were the action figures. The unquestioned integrity of Alec Guinness gave power and soul to the role of Obi Wan Kenobi, a role that was key to the magic of the tale, key to the line that has stayed with us – may the Force be with you!

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

I know that some have practically created a religion out of this and the other Star Wars tales but I really didn’t see anything particularly special about them. The basic premise was recycled right out of old B flicks from the 50’s – different actors, different periods, different costumes, – same old conquering hero, sidekicks, action, blah, blah, blah. Luke could have been any number of personalities from Hercules to Robin Hood. Perfectly fine stuff, state of the art special effects (circa 1977) and, of course, now another true classic. As for me though - I lost interest after the fonts started rolling off into space and never watched another one. But then, I was once in love with the 1968 version of "Camelot" with Richard Harris - so what do I know!

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

This was the first movie where the question was not, "Have you seen it?" But "How many times have you seen it?" And usually followed by, "Wanna see it again?" There is little I can add to the previous comments. It was a ground breaker..It made you want more, but nothing, not even the sequels ever came close.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

I saw this as an adult when it first came out and have watched it many times since. The story and characters still grip me, even knowing where the plot leads, and I'm still on the edge of my seat for the final flight scenes. Everything, from the casting to the soundtrack and the then-revolutionary special effects, makes it a great movie!

This movie was so far ahead of it's time that it has captured generations of fans. Lucas fooled and amazed millions of fans and created an empire with this movie.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Excellent sci-fi drama! Although Lucas borrowed heavily from a number of different Toho/Kurosawa films, he put together the ideas to make something truly astonishing. Although I consider Empire Strikes Back to be the best in the entire series, Star Wars would have to come in close second. And besides, any of the Star Wars movies is FAR better than The Matrix!

This is a great series. People do take it a bit too far, though. George Lucas did a great job creating this whole idea.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Star Wars gets a 5 star rating from me. I can remember my dad packing my family up in the car to drive an extra 40 minutes into downtown San Diego so that we could see Star Wars on what was then the biggest screen in the area and boy was it worth it. At 10 and 8 years old my brother and I went insane for Star Wars, it was by far the greatest thing we'd ever seen on the big screen or anywhere else for that matter. Empire was good too, but Star Wars was so new and so different from anything we'd seen before. It is so basic, the fight between good and evil, a really basic story that has been explored and explored in film and was rejuvinated in the new setting of a galaxy far, far away. I think the film was wonderfully cast with each of the lead characters being spunky and powerful but just vulnerable enough to keep us rooting for them. I really can't say a bad thing about it, it was genius for its time.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

*The* movie. Mythopoiesis as it should always be: deep rooted, intelligent, autoironic and sweeping in concept. Highly enjoyable, a trip in outer space with all the trimmings of the genre.A superlative achievement.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Star Wars is the pioneer of the special effects movies. The difference of SW and many of todays 'special effects' showcases is that it had an excellent SF storyline which made for the excellent sequels. It is an adventure that gets better with repeatedly viewing. Although the special effects in this movie appear contrived compared to today's, one has to look very closely to notice the mistakes. This is the prime reason George Lucas later re-made the original into what it should have been the first time. An excellently cast movie, good direction, good story: Darth Vader is the absolute personification of the arch villain. A classic story of good versus evil.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Star Wars is the 3rd best of the famous George Lucas's Star Wars Trilogy. It was in fact an OK film, it was just that Carrie Fisher was whining her way throughout this film, and she just totally annoyed me, and Harrison Ford was just too unready in his role, while the rest of the cast was fresh and ready in their roles.

I'm not sure I can say anything about this movie that hasn't already been said. It's not only the greatest Sci Fi of all time, but it's the greatest movie of all time, PERIOD! Sci Fi wouldn't be what it is today had it not been for Star Wars.

The greatest movie ever made! I love this movie! Any and all Star Wars movies are the best! You have to love this great space saga. The idea of the light sabers and the Jedi, and the use of the all-powerful force is brilliant. George Lucas is the man.

Star Wars Trilogy (A Hope / The Empire Strikes Back...

Some of the acting may be less than great (ahem) but this film is just so much fun to watch! Lucas created a complete universe that is easy for the audience to believe in and become part of. Also, he stuck with one of the oldest story/myth progressions of all time, which I think is why the film works so well and is so enjoyable (that goes for the whole trilogy, really). Even the SFX looked better than sci-fi films that followed for the next 15 years until CGI really hit its stride. And who didn't want to be Hans Solo when they were young (boys, anyway) because he had the coolest ship and sidekick in the galaxy...

I first saw this movie in third grade, I told my friend about it and now we can't get enough of Star Wars. We were both excited over the new release of the Phantom Menace, we got action figures and books, you name it we have it, I cannot wait until 2002 until the next movie comes out.
